The Texas Rangers defeated the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, 8-2, but the Cubs still prevailed in two of the three matches in the series.

In the first two matches, Chicago had excellent opening pitching, which limited the Rangers to just three runs. In the NL Central, Chicago is 3-3 at home and tied for third place.

Texas took the lead in this game with four runs in the second inning and three more in the sixth. In five innings, Jameson Taillon gave up five runs, three of them earned, and was charged with the defeat.

With three runs allowed on Sunday and an overall ERA of 5.02, the Cubs bullpen was atrocious thus far, ranking 22nd. The statistics are good (22 H, 13 BB, 1 HR, 28.2 innings), but they are helpless against rallies.

Drew Smyly is expected to reduce Chicago’s reliance on the bullpen. Early on, however, that was not the case; in his first start, he is 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA after allowing six earned runs in 4.2 innings.
