The 4th seeded Providence Friars and the 1st seeded Kansas Jayhawks will battle in a Midwest Region – Sweet 16 match on Friday, March 25 at 7:29 p.m. ET at the United Center in Chicago.  The Kansas Jayhawks are 14-4 in the Big 12 and are 30-6 overall.  The Providence Friars are 14-3 in the Big East and are 27-5 overall. 

 

The Providence Friars  advanced to the Sweet 16 after dominating the 12th seeded Richmond Spiders at 79-51 last Saturday.  Providence built a 15-point lead at the half and scored 40 points in the second half to secure the victory. 

 

Five players scored in double figures led by Noah Horchier with 16 points and 14 rebounds.  Al Durham had 13 points, A.J. Reeves added 12 points, while Nate Watson and Jared Bynum scored 10 points each. 

 

The Friars were 51.9% in shooting, 12% more than the Spiders.  They made 12 of 22 three-pointers and 11 of 14 free throws.  Providence outrebounded Richmond, 38-27 but committed 10 turnovers.

 

Nate Watson leads Providence with 13.5 ppg and 55.5% in shooting.  Jared Bynum leads with 4.1 assists and 1 steal per game.  Noah Horchler leads with 8.4 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game. As a team, the Friars are averaging 71.8 ppg (170th), 37.6 rebounds (tied for 87th), and 13.3 assists per game is 181st in the league.

The Kansas Jayhawks had a tougher time to reach the Sweet 16, defeating the Creighton Bluejays at 79-72 last Saturday.  Kansas was only up by 1 point at the half, but held on and outscored Creighton in the second half by 6 points to secure the win.  Creighton came as close as 72-73 with 1.43 left in the game. 

 

Remy Martin led in scoring with 20 points while Ochai Agbaji added 15 points.  Christian Braun scored 13 points, including the 3-pointer late in the game.  Jalen Wilson finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.  Kansas dominated Creighton in rebounding, 47-31 and forced the Bluejays to commit 8 turnovers. 

 

This season, Ochai Agbaji leads with 19.3 ppg.  Christian Braun leads with 50.1% in shooting.  Jalen Wilson leads with 7.2 rpg.  Dajuan Harris Jr. leads with 4.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game while David McCormack is the leader with 0.9 blocks per game. 

 

As a team, Kansas is averaging 78.7 ppg (24th), 37.8 RPG (81st), and 15.5 assists per game which is 43rd in the league.
