Iowa State Cyclones vs Wisconsin Badgers 3/20/2022 Picks Predictions Previews

The #11 Iowa State Cyclones will meet with the #3 Wisconsin in a Men’s Basketball Championship – Midwest Region – 2nd Round clash in Fiserv Forum, WI, on Sunday, March 20, 2022, at 6:10 PM ET.

T.J. Otzelberger, the Cyclones’ first-year head coach, orchestrated probably the greatest comeback in college basketball history, with the Cyclones advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament thanks to a victory over LSU, after earning only two games last season.

LSU never led by more than one point, as Iowa State built a 24-point lead, then Tyrese Hunter came up big with two crucial three-pointers in the final seconds after the Tigers closed the gap with an 11-1 run.

The Cyclones are 18-15 against the spread and covered two of their last three games, including a matchup against Baylor as a double-digit underdog to close off the regular season. The Cyclones are 15-18 in overs after their last two matches were both under the betting total.

The Iowa State offense struggled, averaging 66.2 points per game on shooting splits of 50.7 percent from two and 32.2 percent from three, all of which rank 155th or lower nationally.

  • The University of Iowa State Cyclones is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 matches in the Big Ten Conference.
  • Iowa State is 1-11 SU in their last 12 matches played in March.
  • The total went UNDER in 5 of Iowa State’s last 5 matches played on a Sunday.

Iowa State Cyclones vs Wisconsin Badgers Predictions 3/20/2022

Wisconsin overcame Colgate in the first round in front of a rowdy Milwaukee crowd, despite the fact that it wasn’t easy against the 14 seed. After a 9-2 start, Colgate led for much of the night and was still up 52-50 with 10 minutes left when Wisconsin went on a 10-0 run to take control.

Wisconsin is currently 17-15 against the spread, despite losing three consecutive matches as a favorite, including outright defeats to Michigan State and Nebraska. The Badgers have a solid 19-13 over/under record, but their previous two games went under the total.

The Badgers’ methodical offense generates 70.6 points per game while shooting poorly, with 48.8 percent from two and 31.3 percent from three, both ranked 246th or lower nationwide.

Wisconsin’s scoring defense is 90th in the country, allowing 66.3 points per game while opponents shoot 49.4 percent from two and 32.7 percent from beyond the arc.

  • Wisconsin is 5-10 ATS in their last 15 matches.
  • The total went UNDER in 4 of Wisconsin’s last 5 matches.
  • The University of Wisconsin is 14-4 SU in their last 18 matches in the Big 12 Conference.

#11 Iowa State Cyclones vs #3 Wisconsin Badgers. The NCAAB pick for this game is the #3 Wisconsin Badgers. While the Badgers have problems as a team, they continue to win games and will be difficult to beat in front of a raucous home crowd in Milwaukee.

Iowa State’s offense is too restricted to pull off another upset against a tougher opponent this time, and Wisconsin at least has one exceptional playmaker in Davis to turn to when they need a clutch basket.

The Cyclones aren’t here because of their offense, which ranks 186th in the country in effective field goal percentage while turning the ball over frequently, and Hunter’s hot shooting performance is unlikely to be repeated.

With outstanding rebounding and free throw rates allowed, the Badgers defense ranked 37th in KenPom, does a wonderful job of not helping opponents out.

The Iowa State defense’s strongest strength is forcing turnovers at the fourth-highest rate in the country, but Wisconsin offsets that by being the top team in college basketball at avoiding giveaways, with a percentage of 12.6 percent.

When you consider that this is effectively a home game for Wisconsin, you can see how the Badgers can handle such a small spread. Wisconsin will win to a predicted score of 65-60.
