Eduardo Rodriguez, a left-handed pitcher, was signed to a five-year, $77 million contract by the Tigers on Nov. 16. Báez was signed to a six-year, $140 million deal by Detroit a few weeks later.

One day after the World Series concluded, the Tigers got catcher Tucker Barnhart from the Reds in exchange for third-base prospect Nick Quintana.

The Tigers would prefer to add another veteran starter, but not on the same level as Rodriguez. They’re also seeking relief pitching, particularly someone who can strike out left-handed batters. In addition, Detroit could use another impact bat, most likely in the outfield.

The possibility of Matthew Boyd returning is not ruled out, but it’s far from a first choice for either side. Boyd is optimistic about making a quick recovery from surgery on his left forearm’s flexor tendon.

Boyd was non-tendered on Nov. 30 after the Tigers were more cautious about his status early in the offseason and were hoping for more of a full-season rotation. Before offseason movements came to a standstill, he received interest from other teams.

The Tigers might try to move one of their young starting pitchers, such as Matt Manning or Joey Wentz, to aid elsewhere, but given the team’s annual emphasis on pitching depth, that’s doubtful unless they get a very lucrative offer.

Detroit may potentially attempt to trade one of its young outfielders, particularly if the team signs a seasoned free agent.
