The Toronto Blue Jays (63-54) will collide with the Washington Nationals (50-68) in a short two-game competition at Nationals Park in Washington on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at 7:05 PM ET. Toronto bowed to the Seattle Mariners in the AL Inter-Division three-game set over the weekend. The Blue Jays lost the first two installments at 2-3 on Friday and 3-9 on Saturday but managed to get back and prevented a series sweep after an 8-3 victory in the final game on Sunday. Toronto dumped a 6-1 lead over Seattle after five innings and scored two more runs in the last two frames with 12 hits for the win. Starter Steven Matz made 5.0 scoreless innings with three hits and three walks allowed while striking out four batters of the Mariners to earn the victory for the Jays. LF Corey Dickerson acquired a three-run score on two hits with an RBI while RF Teoscar Hernández added two runs on a triple and drove one RBI in the win.

 

Toronto will be sending right-hander Alek Manoah to start the quick two-game set versus the Nationals on Tuesday. The 23-year-old righty thrower is 5-1 with an impressive 2.59 ERA, a nice 1.02 WHIP, and struck out 71 batters in the majors this season. Manoah is very dominant on the mound with his fastball pitch used in attacking opponent’s batters.

The Washington Nationals ended up with seven consecutive losses after they kneeled to the Atlanta Braves in a three-game series by a sweep over the weekend. Washington gave up the series opener at 2-4 on Friday while losing the next match at 12-2 on Saturday. The Nats failed to recover and surrendered the series finale to the Braves by a point deficit at 6-5 on Sunday. The Nationals managed to tie the score at 3-3 after the 5th frame but scored only two runs resulting in a 6-5 loss last time out. Starter Paolo Espino lasted for just 4.0 innings with five earned runs on eight hits allowed while granting two walks and struck out three Atlanta hitters in the losing effort. Center Fielder Victor Robles led his team with one run, two hits, and one RBI while 3rd Baseman Carter Kieboom drove two RBIs on a double for Washington in defeat.       

 

Washington will counter with Right-handed Pitcher Erick Fedde to take the starting role in Game 1 of the Inter-League quick two-game challenge against the Blue Jays on Tuesday. The 28-year-old right-handed starter is 4-8 with a 5.12 ERA, a WHIP at 1.42, and a total of 83 strikeouts in his 91.1 innings pitched this season. In his last four starts this year, Fedde gave up 25 hits, 20 runs (all earned), and 11 walks in 14.7 innings pitched.
