Steelers at Patriots—NFL pick is Pittsburgh Steelers +6. Pittsburgh has been good in this role as a road underdog covering five straight the past five seasons. Like the addition in the draft of Benny Snell a running back from Kentucky to work in some carries with James Conner in the backfield. Hopefully more run pass balance especially on the road where big plays are harder to get. Pittsburgh has been talking about using a split back formation. There is talent in the Pittsburgh receiving corps and the ability for Ben Roethlisberger to get in rhythm by spreading the ball out and including his backs in the passing game. This was the number one offense in the red zone in 2019 and an offense that threw for 313 yards per game. New England enters the season without Rob Gronkowski who retired. They are dealing with injuries at wide receiver and tight end suspension. Team is also without their starting center with blood clots in his lungs. Patrick Chung a starting safety has a forearm injury and is questionable about playing. Patriots do have a losing spread record the past two Septembers failing to cover four of seven. Texans at Saints—NFL free pick is Houston Texans and New Orleans Saints to play over the total of 53 points. New Orleans puts up a lot of points at home averaging 31 and 391 yards a season ago. Like playing overs in games involving NFC vs. AFC opponents with a strong offense at home. These teams play one another once every four years and the defenders are not familiar with the formation and passing patterns they are facing. Texans pass rush will be impacted with the Clowney trade to Seattle. Texans pass defense got worse last year giving up 258 yards per game which was 28th in the league. Team was also 29th in the red zone which is not good when facing the Saints. New Orleans scored on 51.8% of their drives second best in the league and fourth best in the red zone. Broncos at Raiders—Free pick is Denver Broncos at a pick. Looks like the best unit on the field will be the Broncos defense. Oakland had the worst pass rush and sack percentage in the NFL last year. That plays into the hands of first year quarterback Joe Flacco being productive in his debut as quarterback for his new team the Denver Broncos. Raiders surrendered 29 points and 381 yards per game. They also couldn’t get off the field on third down ranking 30th in the NFL. Denver has a very good running game that produced 4.9 yards per carry. Emmanuel Sanders has returned at wide receiver for Denver. Oakland has struggled against the division with a 3-9 record the past two seasons. Broncos are talented on defense and puts pressure on quarterback in the top quartile of sack percentage. Upgrade to head coach Vic Fangio who entered coaching in the NFL in the 1980s. Raiders are dealing with injuries at running back. Jon Gruden’s first season was a disaster as the team hit rock bottom on offense and defense and the coach remains employed with nine years left on his contract. They were 1-5 straight up in the division in Gruden’s first season back. It is hard to quick fix these many problems in the NFL.
