Tampa finished third in the AL East in the 2022 season and qualified for the final wild-card spot in the American League. They were swept by the Cleveland Guardians in the Wild Card Series.

The Rays were near the top of the league in pitching last season, ranking 4th in both ERA and WHIP, but still managed to get stronger, signing free agent starting pitcher Zach Eflin (3-5 4.04 ERA 2022 season).

They did lose starting pitcher Corey Kluber to free agency and traded away first baseman Ji-Man Choi for a minor-league prospect.

Tampa Bay went 1-1 in two McClanahan starts versus Detroit twice during the 2022 season. He pitched excellently at home in May, allowing one run in seven innings and striking out 11 batters.

The Tigers got the best of him at Comerica Park on Lou Whitaker Night in July where he allowed six hits and four earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched.
