Worst NFL Underdogs ATS Past Three Seasons 3/22/2020

The NFL schedule remains intact during league suspensions as the preseason begins in early August. During this time with no sports will continue to offer betting tips. Today, a look at the worst NFL underdogs against the spread the past three seasons.

At the bottom are a couple of teams that have received hype about heading in the right direction.

Worst on this list are the Cleveland Browns who have failed to cover 28 of 47 underdog roles (40.4%). Browns were a turnover prone team in 2019 that was undisciplined on the field as a heavy penalized team. Quarterback Baker Mayfield completed only 59.4% of his passes with 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. It was a team that had trouble sustaining drives ranking 28th in the league with an average of 5.47 plays per drive. Negative yardage with penalties and sacks makes it difficult to move the chains. Kevin Stefanski is the next Cleveland coach. He was the former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator.

The Raiders are second worst team covering as an underdog. The Las Vegas Raiders have failed to cover 27 of 46 in this role (41.3%). John Gruden enters his third season with the Silver and Black. His 13 year career as a head coach he has a .510 winning percentage. Much of the Raiders issues are on the defensive side. They lack pressure on the quarterback and don’t force turnovers. They were the third worst defensive inside the red zone in 2019 also near the bottom of the league on third down. The team had three first round draft picks in 2019 and have two in the upcoming 2020 draft. They do have three picks in the third round. Lots of pressure is put on quarterback Derek Carr. He is coming off a year where he completed 70.4% of his throws with 21 touchdowns and 8 picks. Team needs to improve on a 22nd ranking inside the red zone.

Tied with the Las Vegas Raiders failing to cover 27 of 46 as an underdog the past three seasons are the Denver Broncos (41.3%). It is clear the reason has been the play at the quarterback position. Team has struggled to find their replacement for Peyton Manning. Joe Flacco an immobile quarterback was not the answer in 2019 as he was cut this offseason. Vic Fangio returns for his second season as head coach. Offensive performance key in key areas as the team was 30th on third down and 28th inside the red zone. Defensively the Broncos are still way above average.
