East 2nd Round – Game 4, FLA leads series 3-0

The Atlantic Division has been full of surprises in this second-round matchup between the #2 seed Toronto Maple Leafs and the second Wild Card team, the Florida Panthers.

Both teams shocked many by defeating tough opponents in the first round to advance to this stage.

The Leafs haven’t made it out of the first round since 2004, while the Panthers defeated the President’s Trophy-winning Boston Bruins in overtime of Game 7.

During the regular season, the teams met four times, and the Leafs won three of those games. Three of the four games required overtime to determine a winner, making for an exciting season series.

However, in Game 1 of this playoff series, the Panthers surprised many by picking up a 4-2 win on the road. Despite outplaying Florida in Game 1 and Game 2, Toronto couldn’t find a way to win.

In Game 3, the Panthers won 3-2 in overtime, putting the Leafs on the brink of elimination.

The Leafs need a miracle to turn things around in this series, as they are down 3-0 and haven’t received any goals from their core players. The puck drops for Game 4 at 7 pm EST tonight at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida.

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs are 1-4 SU in their last 5 games.
  • Toronto is 1-4 SU in their last 5 matches with the Florida Panthers.
  • The Maple Leafs are 6-1 SU in their last 7 games on the road.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Florida Panthers Predictions 5/10/2023

The Leafs had the upper hand in the first two games of this series at home, but they couldn’t seal the deal and now they face a do-or-die situation on the road in Florida tonight.

The Panthers had a rocky start to the year after a disappointing playoff exit last year, but they bounced back in the second half of the season.

They clinched the last playoff spot in the East with a 42-32-8 record, edging out the Penguins and the Sabres by a point.

They ended the regular season on a high note, winning six of their last eight games, despite losing their last two.

The Panthers have been a scoring machine this season. They rank sixth in the NHL with 3.51 goals per game, on a league-high 36.8 shots per game.

They also lead the league in expected goals (3.8 per game) and high-danger shots. Their power play has been effective, converting 22.8% of their opportunities, good for tenth in the NHL.

Matthew Tkachuk (109 points, 69 assists), who came over from Calgary in the offseason and proved to be a great fit for the Cats, and Carter Verhaeghe (42 goals) are Florida’s top scorers this season.

The Panthers have had some issues on defense, allowing 3.68 goals per game this season, the twelfth-most in the NHL, on 31.7 shots against per game.

They’ve also given up a lot of quality chances, ranking eighth in expected goals against (3.42 per game) and third in high-danger shots against.

Their penalty kill has been shaky, killing only 75.9% of their penalties, the tenth-worst in the NHL.

Alex Lyon, who started the season as their third goalie, became their starter for their series against the Bruins after Sergei Bobrovsky struggled this year (24-20-3 record, 3.07 GAA, .901 save percentage) and Spencer Knight was away from the team for most of the season with personal issues.

Lyon was hot down the stretch, going 6-1-1 in his last eight starts and helping Florida make the playoffs. He finished the regular season with a 9-4-2 record, a 2.89 GAA, a .914 save percentage, and a shutout.

Bobrovsky took over in that series though and played lights out in the final games to keep the Panthers alive and help them advance to the second round.

The Panthers pulled off a stunning upset in the first round, beating the best regular season team in NHL history in seven games, eliminating the President’s Trophy-winning Boston Bruins. It was an

incredible feat. The Bruins set new records for points and wins in a regular season.

They dominated the league and had a 3-1 series lead with several chances to finish it off, but the Panthers fought back (with some luck on their side) and beat Boston in overtime of Game 7.

After splitting the first two games in Boston where the Bruins played poorly at home, the Bs won the next two games in Florida easily to put Florida on the ropes.

In Game 5 at home in Boston, the Bruins were clearly superior, outshooting Florida 47-25 and outplaying them by an expected goal margin of 4.52-3.

  • The total stayed UNDER in 5 of Florida’s last 5 meetings with the MapeLeafs.
  • The Florida Panthers are 2-4 SU in their last 6 games at home.
  • The Panthers are 9-3 SU in their last 12 games at home against Toronto.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Florida Panthers. The NHL’s pick is the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto faces a must-win situation in game 4 after losing three straight games.

Expect the Maple Leafs to finally show up Wednesday night as their stars will step up.

Expect Toronto to use their skills on both ends of the ice to get the victory to keep this series alive for a game 5. Final Score Prediction, Toronto Maple Leafs win 4-1.
