South Dakota State JackRabbits vs Providence Friars 3/17/2022 Picks Predictions Previews

The #13 South Dakota State JackRabbits will go against the #4 Providence Friars in a Men’s Basketball Championship – Midwest Region – 1st Round clash in KeyBank Center, NY, on Thursday at 12:40 PM ET.

South Dakota State claimed 21 straight matches, the nation’s longest ongoing winning run. They went undefeated in the Summit League, completing with an 18-0 record, and then won the conference championship by defeating Omaha 87-79, South Dakota 83-60, and North Dakota State 75-69.

Alabama 104-88, Washington 87-76, Idaho 98-84, and Missouri State 75-63 were the Jackrabbits’ defeats in non-conference matches. South Dakota State is ranked No. 69 by KenPom, with an altered offensive efficiency of 12th and a defensive efficiency of 223rd.

The team’s best performers are 6’7 senior Douglas Wilson (16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds) and 6’6 sophomore Baylor Scheierman (16.2 ppg, 7.8 rebounds). Noah Freidel, a 6’4 sophomore, posted 20.1 points per game in the first ten games of the season but appeared in only seven of the last 24 games.

According to reports, Freidel is dealing with personal troubles and only scored three points a game in his last seven appearances. It’s unclear how much Freidel can play in the NCAA Tournament and what he’s capable of, which may have a large impact on how far South Dakota State advances.

  • The total went UNDER in 6 of South Dakota State’s last 9 matches.
  • The University of South Dakota State JackRabbits is 20-0 SU in their last 20 matches this season.
  • South Dakota State is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 matches played on a Thursday.

South Dakota State JackRabbits vs Providence Friars Predictions 3/17/2022

During the regular season, Providence ranked first in the Big East with a 14-3 record. After defeating Butler 65-61 in the conference tournament, the Friars were defeated by Creighton 85-58 in the conference semifinals. They defeated Creighton 72-51 in the regular season two weeks prior. According to KenPom, Providence is ranked No. 48, fourth among Big East teams.

On the attacking side, they rank 32nd while on the defensive side, they rank 80th. The team’s scoring is evenly distributed, with five players averaging at least 9.6 points each game. Nate Watson, a 6’10 senior, tops the team in scoring with 13.8 points per game and is yet to miss a game this season.

With victories over Wisconsin, Northwestern, Vermont, and Texas Tech, the Friars earned 10 of their 11 non-conference matches this season. On November 23, they lost 58-40 to Virginia, their only defeat outside of the Big East.

  • The total went OVER in 6 of Providence’s last 8 matches.
  • Providence is 7-3 SU in their last 10 matches this season.
  • The total went OVER in 10 of Providence’s last 14 matches played in March.

#13 South Dakota State JackRabbits vs #4 Providence Friars. The NCAAB pick for this game is the Providence Friars. Not to take anything away from the Jackrabbits’ accomplishments this year, but they don’t have a lot of value as a 2.5-point favorite in this game.

When it comes to non-conference play, South Dakota State is not particularly impressive. According to KenPom, they only completed the 249th best schedule. They also lost their only game by 16 points to a ranked team at the time (Alabama). Providence is a more balanced team that faced the 56th toughest schedule.

The Friars are a dangerous offensive team, but they also play well on defense. The Jackrabbits’ attack is explosive, but their defense offers little resistance and will struggle to make huge stops down the stretch.

With a 21-game unbeaten run and so many experts picking South Dakota State, the Friars will not be taking their opponent lightly and should come in with a chip on their shoulder.

This year, Providence performed admirably being underdogs, and I anticipate them to progress with a victory over South Dakota State. The Friars will win predicted at 77-73.
