The East Tennessee State Buccaneers will meet with the Vanderbilt Commodores in NCAAF action in Vanderbilt Stadium, on Saturday, September 04, 2021, at 8:00 PM (EDT). And, as we all know, the Commodores’ season was a massive tragedy — but not entirely so for the Buccaneers. ETSU, like many FCS schools, participated in the spring; they had eight matches scheduled, all against conference opponents, but matches against Wofford and Chattanooga were canceled.

They finished 4-2 in the six matches they did play. They won 24-20 at VMI, which was then placed in the FCS top 10 and qualified for the FCS playoffs, and were in contention for the SoCon title before losing 21-13 to Mercer in their final regular-season meeting. Last year, the Buccaneers had FCS All-American running back Quay Holmes, who was a junior; their best two receivers (Will Huzzie and Juliun Lane-Price) were sophomores.

The Commodores are coming off a ten-game winless run, and their most previous victory came against these exact Buccaneers in the second tournament of the 2019 season. It’s a good bet that the Commodores will break their winless skid with a victory against the Buccaneers. Although the squad was very poor in 2020, freshman quarterback Ken Seals had a good year, completing 64.6 percent of his throws and scoring 12 touchdowns. He didn’t have much to offer, but he’s an intriguing piece for new coach Clark Lea to work with.

Given the lack of connectedness owing to constricted non-conference timetables, I’m not sure Jeff Sagarin’s evaluations for the 2020-21 football season are all that reliable, but his Predictor rating might have labeled Vanderbilt as a 9.5-point favorite over ETSU last year supposing the match was played in Nashville.

While ETSU is a decent FCS club, Vanderbilt is returning from a 0-9 season with a new head coach and a lot of questions on both ends of the ball. The Bucs did not fare well against FBS opponents since resurrecting the football program in 2015, with a 38-0 defeat to Vanderbilt in 2019 (and you may remember it was a fairly awful Vanderbilt squad) and a 59-3 defeat in Knoxville in 2018, but Randy Sanders appears to have the program having a turnaround. The Vanderbilt Commodores will win to a predicted score of 17-3.
