Indianapolis Colts vs. Buffalo Bills NFL Betting Pick Prediction 8/12/2023
Colts at Bills—Shane Steichen enters his first year as head coach for the Colts. He was the former offensive coordinator for the Eagles. Team needs to improve pass protection with 60 sacks allowed in 2022. Indianapolis was 30th in points scored and yards per play. Indianapolis was good on stops on third down and held running attacks to 4.1 yards per rush. Colts rotation at quarterback includes Gardner Minshew and rookie Anthony Richardson. Sam Ehlinger is third on the depth chart. Buffalo was the AFC East champ with a 13-3 mark. Playoff exit at home in the Divisional Round was a disappointment. Buffalo has the profile of a Super Bowl team sitting second in scoring offense and defense. Team was top offensively on third down with 50.3% completions. Behind Josh Allen at quarterback are Kyle Allen and Matt Barkley. Indianapolis rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson will start and so will the rest of the starting offense for a quarter. Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen and wide receiver Stefon Diggs will not play but the rest of the starters will play about a quarter. Allen and Barkley have NFL experience. Would expect the Colts to be conservative with Richardson who may be facing the Bills starting defense. Play Buffalo +5.
Tennessee Titans vs. Chicago Bears NFL Betting Pick Prediction 8/12/2023
Titans at Bears—Mike Vrabel enters his sixth year at the helm with the Titans. It was an injury riddled season for Tennessee and closed the year with a seven game losing streak to end at 7-10. Team needs to improve with scoring sitting 28th in the league and 30th in passing yardage. Ryan Tannehill is the starter at quarterback with Malik Willis and Will Levis the backups. Chicago head coach Matt Eberflus enters his second season. Bears finished at 3-14 losing their final ten games and all six against the NFC North. Much improvement needed on both sides of the ball. The team was 32nd in scoring defense and getting stops on third down. They were the top rushing team in the league in 2022 but averaged only 130 yards passing for game sitting last. Justin Fields returns as starting quarterback. He is backed by PJ Walker, Nathan Peterman and Tyson Bagent. Fields and select starters will play between 7 to 15 snaps for Chicago. Vrabel during his history with the Titans usually rests starters the entire preseason. Not too enamored by the backups for each quarterback here. Play Tennessee and Chicago under 37.5.
New York Jets vs. Carolina Panthers NFL Betting Pick Prediction 8/12/2023
Jets at Panthers—New York opened their preseason with a 21-16 defeat to the Cleveland Browns in the Hall of Fame Game last week. New York held a 13-7 lead at the half then get outscored 14-0 in the second half. Jets converted only 2 of 12 on third down and allowed 172 rushing yards for 5.2 yards per rush. Aaron Rodgers is under center with backups Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle. Chris Streveler is injured. Frank Reich enters his first year with Carolina after his team with Indianapolis. Quarterback Bryce Young was the teams first round pick. They added some key additions at receiver. Team sat bottom third in both scoring offense and defense. Offensively the team sat 30th on third down. Byrce Young is QB 1. Backups are Andy Dalton, Matt Corral and Jake Luton. Rodgers expects to sit this one out with Wilson getting the start and Boyle plays the second half. Reich will play starters in Week 1 and expects to for the entire preseason. Two years ago he sat starters with Indianapolis and the team got off to a bad start. He credited that with not playing starters in the preseason. New York backups struggled to stop the Browns. Prefer the quarterback rotation for the Panthers and coaching philosophy of Reich here. Offense will revolve around Rodgers and this profile will be plain vanilla from the Jets standpoint. Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Dallas Cowboys NFL Betting Pick Prediction 8/12/2023
Jaguars at Cowboys—Doug Peterson enters his second season with the Jaguars. After a 3-7 start the team rallied to go 6-1 to close the regular season and win the AFC South. They had a top ten passing offense behind Trevor Lawrence and on the ground averaged 4.7 yards per attempt sitting ninth. Improvement needed defensively on third down as the team allowed 43.2% conversions sitting 29th. Trevor Lawrence returns as starting quarterback. C.J. Beathard and Nathan Rourke back him up. Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy is now in his fourth season with the team. Team was 12-5 and made the playoffs as a Wildcard team. Dak Prescott suffered a thumb injury that forced him to miss five starts. Cowboys had a good profile in 2022 sitting fourth in scoring offense and fifth defensively. Behind Dak Prescott are Cooper Rush and Will Grier. Starters will see some action in this game for the Jaguars. Cowboys starters are unlikely to play. Prefer backup ground behind Dak here. There is a battle for the backup quarterback position between Cooper Rush and Will Grier. Play Dallas +4.
Philadelphia Eagles vs. Baltimore Ravens NFL Betting Pick Prediction 8/12/2023
Eagles at Ravens—Philadelphia were defending NFC Champions but was defeated by Kansas City in the Super Bowl as mistakes were costly. Team finished at 13-4 in the regular season. Eagles averaged 28.1 points per game and piled up 389 yards sitting among the league leaders. Defensively they held opponents to 4.8 yards per play which was tops in the NFL. Jalen Hurts is the starter on quarterback. Behind him are Marcus Mariota, Ian Book and Tanner McKee. Baltimore signed Lamar Jackson to a five year contract. Last year was filled with drama about the team’s future at quarterback. Jackson missed ten games the past two seasons. Defense was strong for Baltimore as they sat third allowing 18.5 points per game and 3.9 yards per pass attempt. Team was fourth on stops on third down allowing only 34.9% conversions. Lamar Jackson is the starter at QB. Tyler Huntley, Josh Johnson and Anthony Brown are the backups. On the Ravens side Lamar Jackson and established starters will not play. Eagles starters figure to not play much during the preseason. Under Siriani Hurts played very little in the preseason. Baltimore carries a preseason 23 game win streak. Prefer the QB rotation on the Ravens side. There is motivation for the Ravens to keep the win streak going. Play Baltimore -4.5.
LA Chargers vs. LA Rams NFL Betting Pick Prediction 8/12/2023
Chargers at Rams—Head coach Brandon Staley is in his third season with the Chargers. They were a Wildcard playoff team but blew a 27-0 lead to Jacksonville to suffer a horrible exit. LAC needs improvement on the 30th ranked rushing attack which averaged 3.8 yards per rush. Run defense was worse in the NFL as they allowed 5.4 per attempt. Justin Herbert is the number one at QB. His backups are Easton Stick and Max Duggan. Following their Super Bowl victory the Rams fell to 5-12 in 2023. Team had turnover on their offensive line that impacted pass protection. The offense sunk to 27th in scoring by averaging 18.1 points a game. The run game produced only 4 yards per attempt. They were 32nd and last in total offense by averaging 280 yards per game. Improvement needed on pass defense. Behind Matthew Stafford at quarterback are Brett Rypien, Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn. Brandon Staley seldom plays any starters in the preseason. Same can be said about Rams coach Sean never plays his starters in the preseason and Saturday will be no different. There are 40 rookies on this Rams roster. Stick has experience as a backup and Duggan performed well in college and will give a battle for the position behind Stafford. A backup battle for the Chargers here. Play LA Chargers +3.
