LA Angels woes continue against Oakland and Texas. Angels go into Oakland 1 ½ games back in the AL West and leave Oakland 4 ½ back after getting swept. The Angels pitching staff was torched by the Athletics.

Thoughts on Metrics when evaluation and handicapper MLB players. MLB acted a little late in the Rays and Red Sox series last week. Should have seen it coming.

Notable Mid-week series:

Chicago White Sox at LA Dodgers—White Sox still hovering over the .500 mark. Good news for the team is that Jose Abreu is off the D.L.
LA in a team wide hitting slump. Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Kemp, Hanley Ramirez, Andre Eithier and Carl Crawford all hitting under .270. Puig is leading LA hitting .340.

San Francisco Giants at Cincinnati Reds—San Francisco pulling away from the NL West. 17 games over .500 and seven games up on the LA Dodgers. Angel Pagan who was injured last season is leading the club hitting .427. The Giants pitching staff 3rd in ERA and 2nd in WHIP. Most units returned season to date at +17.32.

Cincinnati returns home after winning four of five on the road. After getting roughed up three starts back at Washington Johnny Cueto just one earned run allowed over his past two starts. Starter Mat Latos is due back in two weeks.

Oakland Athletics at New York Yankees—Best two teams in MLB reside in the Bay Area. Oakland 13 games over .500 after sweeping the LA Angels last weekend. Top staff ERA in MLB at 2.93.

New York Yankees lineup looks rather anemic. There is pressure on Mark Teixeira to play hurt as he has been bothered by a wrist injury this season. The club lost Carlos Belton with a bone spur and he declined surgery. Belton is on the 15-Day DL.

Toronto Blue jays at Detroit Tigers—Series between two first place teams. Toronto 34-24 with a four game lead on the Yankees have the look of the best club in the AL East. They are number two in the league in runs scored at 5 per game and lead the league in home runs at 82 in their first 58 games.

Looks like the Tigers pitching have recovered after giving up 34 runs in 3 games on Memorial Day Weekend.

Notable weekend series:

LA Dodgers at Colorado Rockies—Rockies have fallen to .500 entering Tuesday’s play and trails the San Francisco Giants by 8 ½ games. Third baseman Nolan Arenado is due back late in the month from the DL and the club has dropped 6 of 8 in his absence. The Rockies go 2-7 in their just completed 9 game road trip as they host Arizona on Tuesday.

Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers—Boston trails Toronto by 6 ½ games entering play on Tuesday. They get revenge on the Rays as they sweep a three game series in front of a four game sweep in their interleague series with Atlanta. They drop a 3-2 road decision at Cleveland on Monday.

New York Yankees at Kansas City Royals—KC is three games under .500 at 27-30. They are just 6-15 against the AL Central this season. Losers of 6 of 9 entering play on Tuesday.

St Louis Cardinals at Toronto Blue Jays—St Louis looks to be heading in the wrong direction again. The team has lost five of six heading into Tuesday. Their pitching staff has been giving up some rather high run totals during this rut.

Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates—Brewers hold a five game lead over the St Louis Cardinals in the NL Central. They pile up wins by defeating Miami, Baltimore and the Cubs in consecutive series.

Pittsburgh has moved to 27-30 and has made a positive move in the NL Central. Nice start to a west coast trip winning three of four at the LA Dodgers as Dodger Stadium has been a house of horrors for the Pirates in the recent seasons. They open up a series with the Padres on Monday winning 10-3.

Seattle Mariners at Tampa Bay Rays—We saw a nice outing by King Felix Hernandez on Monday as they shut down the Yankee lineup. The club sits one game over .500 at 29-28 six games behind Oakland. They have had good offensive production on Monday and tonight at Atlanta but can it last?
The Rays get shut out in a fast game on Tuesday at Miami by a 1-0 score. That is 8 straight losses. The Rays have scored two runs total in their past four games. I read a trade rumor where the Rays are looking at approaching the Dodgers for Andre Ethier. They are in desperate need of offensive help.

Talk some NHL and NBA playoffs. What are California Chrome’s chances in the Belmont Stakes. There is bias towards New York based horses in the Belmont due to the sandy track surface. Chrome may be the exception based on his recent workout over the track. Vic Espinoza is a season veteran on the Southern California circuit but no longer a leading rider. Don’t think the pressure will get to him. Tonalist the Peter Pan winner looks tough. Samraat has a win at Belmont Park with 4 wins at Aqueduct.
