Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez hits the DL needing Tommy John surgery.
Warmer weather oncoming means more overs?
With extra wildcard berths don’t see much of a sense of urgency from slumping teams nearing 50 games into the season.

Notable Mid-week series.
New York Mets vs New York Yankees—2 Home and 2 away series. Mets bats wake up in hitter park in Yankees Stadium. Team has trouble hitting in Citi Field. Mets are only 3 games behind Atlanta in division race. Yankees smarting with starting pitchers C.C. Sabathia and Michael Pineda on the DL. Hiroki Kuroda and Vidal Nuno struggline. Tanaka only starter to count on. Even with starting pitching woes Yankees just 1 ½ games behind Orioles on AL East division heading into Tuesday’s game.

Pittsburgh at Milwaukee—Pittsburgh has struggled against the NL Central this year at 12-17. Team is 7 ½ games behind first place Milwaukee. The positive sign for Pittsburgh is the team is has won three straight series as they beat Toronto, San Francisco and St Louis two out of three games. The Pirates hitting .247 as a team.
Milwaukee wins two of three against the Yankees over the weekend after losing consecutive series against and Diamondbacks. Ryan Braun and his .315 batting average returned to the lineup on Tuesday for the Brewers.

Atlanta at San Francisco—Battle between division leaders. Braves hit a major slump as they have seen their lead in the NL East shrink to 1 ½ games over the Nationals. The Atlanta offensive has been dismal. They drop game to the Giants 4-2 on Monday.
Nice win for the Giants after taking 3 of 4 at Dodgers Stadium against the Dodgers. They are getting good pitching as the club is 4th in ERA and 3rd in the league in WHIP. Bad break for San Francisco as Brandon Belt hits the DL with a broken thumb after being hit by a pitch against Dodger starter Paul Maholm.
Notable weekend series:
New York Mets at Washington Nationals—The Nationals benefit from a Braves slump and creep within a game of Atlanta. Washington starters are going deep into games to preserve the bullpen.
Atlanta at St Louis Cardinals—St Louis is one game under .500 at 19-20. Lucky that Milwaukee has slumped as they sit 5 ½ games out of first place. Hitting a major concern for the Cardinals as they rank 27th in runs scored at 3.72 per game. Adam Wainwright has put up some Cy Young numbers out of the gate. Michael Wacha is 2-3 but has an ERA under 3.
San Diego at Colorado—Entering Tuesday the Rockies sit 2 ½ games behind San Francisco. The top offensive team in baseball. Great defensive team. Love the way Nolan Arenado plays third base. Troy Tulowitzki is hovering near a .400 average. Starters Jordan Lyles and Juan Nicasio performing well. Jorge De La Rose keeps bringing down his ERA after a bad start.

Same old San Diego team. They enter play on Tuesday at 17-20. Good starting and bullpen pitching but horrendous hitting. Last in runs scored at 2.97 a game and second to last in team batting average at .224.
LA at Arizona—Dodger hit the road where they have played good baseball at 13-7. They have crushed the Diamondbacks this season. Team is just 21-19 entering play on Tuesday and 8-12 at Dodger Stadium. Looks like A.J. Ellis is ready to return to the lineup after knee surgery early in April. Major concern for Dodgers setup man in Brian Wilson who has allowed 13 earned runs, 16 hits and 11 walks in 15 innings pitching 11 1/3rd innings.
Arizona has no home field advantage as the team has trouble selling tickets as there are tons of empty seats at Chase Field. Club is 3-16 at home this year. They are 25th in runs scored at 3.80 a game and 30th and last in team ERA at 4.8 which is awful for a National League team. Wade Miley, Bronson Arroyo, Trevor Cahill and Michael Bolsinger have been major disappointment on the mound for Arizona.
Miami at San Francisco—Crazy home and away splits for the Marlins this season. They hit under .220 on the road this year. Team is 17-5 at home and 3-14 on the road. Entering Tuesday the club is 20-19 and now must adjust without their ace in the lineup for the rest of the season. Postive is Koehler, Eovaldi and Alvarez have pitched well in the rotation in their eight starts.
Detroit at Boston—Detroit sits at 22-12 and 5 ½ games ahead of Kansas City in the weak AL Central division where four of the five teams are under .500. Tigers are 2nd in team batting at .279 this season. Good work this season by the Detroit starting rotation.
The Red Sox sit at 19-18 entering Tuesday and just 1 ½ games behind first place Baltimore. They have won six of their past eight games as they traveled to Minnesota on Tuesday. Pitching has been outstanding over their past 11 games. They hit .244 ranking 21st in baseball.
Baltimore at Kansas City—Orioles sit in first place in AL East 1 ½ games ahead of the Yankees and Red Sox. Last week they go 5-1 feasting on a slumping Tampa Bay and Houston.
KC returned home after a 4-3 west coast trip. The pitching has been good as the club has a team ERA of 3.58 and WHIP of 1.25. Vargas, Shields and Ventura pitching well in the Royals rotation.
Tampa Bay at LA Angels—Tampa resides in the basement of the AL East at 16-23 and 5 ½ games behind the Baltimore Orioles. Team has had slow starts in recent season. The Rays have dropped six of seven as they play at Seattle on Tuesday night. Tampa Bay team ERA at 4.40 and 24th in baseball.
The Angels are 19-18 as they traveled in Philadelphia on Tuesday. They score runs but the bullpen has been shaky. Jered Weaver has improved his record to 4-2 with an ERA of 3.22.
