Notable Mid-week series.

San Francisco at Pittsburgh—San Francisco had a great week getting ten games over .500 heading into Tuesday meeting with the Pirates. They make a huge comeback on Monday winning 11-10 against Pittsburgh to extend their win streak to six games. Up until Monday the Giants pitching staff had allowed five runs in their past five games.

Pittsburgh sat at 12-20 facing the Giants in Game 2 of their series. Pittsburgh has a team batting average of .238 this season. Gerrit Cole sits with an ERA of 3.69 and the rest of their starting staff are sitting with ERA’s over 4 which is not good with the pitchers hitting in the NL.
New York Yankees at LA Angels—The Yankees are tied with Baltimore atop the AL East where 1 ½ games separated first from last place. Other than Masahiro Tanaka there is major concern for the Yankees starter. Derek Jeter hit a slump at the plate but had two hits in four at bats in Game 1 of this series to move to a .250 average.

I was disappointed that the Angels lost two of three over Texas over the weekend. For the Angels to get over the hump they need to win series against Texas and Oakland. In Game 1 of the series against the Yankees the LA benefitted by erratic Yankee relief pitching. They are 5-2 on this current home stand and sit at 16-15 just two games in the loss column behind Oakland. They are number two in runs scored at 5.26 per game. It has been a bad of late for Tyler Skaggs and Hector Santiago on the hill for the Halos. Both Garrett Richards and C.J. Wilson off to good starts. Jered Weaver has his ERA at 3 ½.

Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs—Cubs did win two of three over the weekend against the Cardinals. Jeff Samardzija took another hard luck loss in Game 1 of their series against the White Sox on Monday. Cubs are hitting .231 ranking 27th and fourth last in the league.
At 16-17 the White Sox trails the first place Detroit Tigers by 8 games in the loss column. The team is hitting but the pitching has been atrocious. They are 28th in Team ERA at 4.64 and last in WHIP at 1 ½ base runners per inning. Pitching coach Don Cooper in my observations in spring training seemed a bit unprofessional riding around in a golf cart during drills and joking too much with players. He did not set a professional tone.

Cincinnati at Boston—Both the Reds and Red Sox are underperforming as they both are under .500 entering play on Tuesday. The Reds took three of four at home over the weekend against division leaguer Milwaukee. Cincinnati has gotten some great starting pitching but aren’t generating enough run support earlier in the season. Close Chapman could return soon. Homer Bailey has struggled with an ERA over 5 and was getting torched tonight at Boston.

The offensive has been inconsistent but is fortunate that the leaders in the AL East were just 1 game over .500 entering the night. They come off taking two of three at home against a good Oakland team allowing a total of seven runs in the three games. Lester, Lackey and Peavy are pitching well. Doubront and Buchholtz have ERA’s approaching six.

Notable weekend series:

St Louis at Pittsburgh—The Cardinals sit one game over .500 and carries a two game win streak into tonight’s game with the Braves. The Pitching has been outstanding for the Red Birds but the club pushes across just 3.6 runs per game ranking 27th.

San Francisco at LA Dodgers—Clayton Kershaw returned to the Dodgers rotation. Left hander Ryu hit the 15-day DL with shoulder soreness. LA is very sloppy with the glove this season. The Dodgers are 12-6 on the road and 6-9 at Dodgers Stadium. Early in the season the Giants hit the Dodgers pitching pretty hard with the only exception was the Sunday night game with Zach Greinke on the hill. LA is 4-3 on the current trip pending’s Tuesday’s outcome. They trail San Francisco by four games in the loss column.

Boston at Texas—If the weather is hot we could see the Red Sox bats come alive here. These two teams typically play high scoring games against one another in Texas. The Rangers are losers of six of their past eight games. They sit 25th in the league in Team ERA at 4.34 and they do allow a high number of base runners. Prince Fielder is hitting just .231 thus far with his new team. The Rangers bullpen has been hit hard.

New York Yankees at Milwaukee—No DH for the Yankees with interleague in an NL park. The Brewers had hit a slump dropping three of four to Cincinnati over the weekend. The bats were quiet. Bounced by crushing Arizona 8-3 on Monday. They have the number three staff ERA in baseball at 3.04. Milwaukee owns a five game lead in the loss column over St Louis.

Chicago Cubs at Atlanta—The Braves hit a massive slump as they are losers of seven straight entering Tuesday. The pitching staff had been carrying this weak hitting lineup and we saw some struggles from the Atlanta pitchers with the offense showing no improvement. Atlanta is still number one in baseball in both Team ERA and WHIP. Aaron Harang is coming back down to earth.

Talk some NHL and NBA playoffs. Mayweather/Maidana fight and Kentucky Derby.
