Tony and Mitch break down the big college basketball games this week from a Las Vegas point spread angle.
Thursday January 18th
9PM ET—St Mary’s vs. Gonzaga (ESPN)
Gonzaga -7.5
Bulldogs have played the more challenging non-conference schedule. They are 10-0 straight up at home. They have pounded their three WCC opponents at home by 33 points or greater.
St Mary’s had a road test at BYU where they won 74-64 in overtime. They too have dominated most WCC opponents.
9PM ET—USC at Oregon (ESPN 2)
Oregon -3.5
Ducks have dominated the Trojans with ten straight victory. Oregon split their two road games at the Arizona schools last week. At home they beat Colorado by 15 and lost to Utah by 10.
USC an underperforming team needs to pile up wins in the PAC 12 for any chance for an at large bid. They are 1-1 on the road in the PAC 12 with an 18 point win at Cal and tough 1 point loss at Stanford losing on a buzzer beating half court shot.
11PM ET—UCLA at Oregon St (FOX 1)
Bruins have split their road games in the PAC 12 with a 23 point win at Cal and loss in overtime at Stanford. UCLA coming off a home loss to Colorado by 9 as an 11.5 favorite.
Oregon St shoots well at home. The are 2-1 at home in the PAC 12 with wins to Colorado and Oregon and a defeat to Utah. They covered both games as double digit underdog in losses at the Arizona schools last week.
Friday January 19th
Indiana at Michigan St (FOX Sports 1)
Michigan St -15
Indiana 1-4 straight up on the road this season. But they won their last one getting a four point win at Minnesota. They enter on a three game win streak with back to back home victories to Penn St and Northwester.
Michigan St has dropped two of three games and failed to cover three straight. Spartans come off the 82-72 home defeat to Michigan after they needed overtime to beat Rutgers by two. They suffered their first conference loss at Ohio St with a 26 point defeat.
Illinois at Wisconsin (FOX Sports 1)
Wisconsin -3.5
Wisconsin fell to 9-10 overall after a 78-50 road defeat at Purdue for their third straight defeat. All those losses on the road failing to cover.
Illinois has four straight losses. They dropped a recent home game in overtime to Iowa then followed up that performance covering as a 4.5 underdog in a one point defeat at Nebraska.
Saturday January 20th
12PM ET—Florida St at Virginia Tech (ESPN 2)
Virginia Tech -1
Florida St after a good non-conference was slow out of the blocks in the ACC at 2-4. They fell at Boston College on Monday 81-75 for their third loss in four games. Win came in overtime to Syracuse.
Virginia Tech 2-3 in the ACC after a 94-86 road defeat at Louisville which broke their two game win streak. Hokies are the number two shooting team in the nation hitting 52%.
2PM ET—Oklahoma at Oklahoma St (ESPN)
Oklahoma -3
Oklahoma fell to 4-2 in the Big 12 after their 18 point defeat at Kansas St. Trae Young struggled in the defeat with turnovers.
Revenge game for Oklahoma St after dropping first meeting 109-89 at Oklahoma. Cowboys are 2-4 in the Big 12 and 10-2 at home. Cowboys have struggled shooting threes.
2PM ET—Texas at West Virginia (CBS)
West Virginia -7
Texas 3-3 in the Big 12 and a poor three point shooting team. Makes it hard to get a read on this team in the handicap. They did beat Texas Tech at home Wednesday 67-58 as a 3.5 underdog.
West Virginia 4-1 in conference and 9-1 at home. Mountaineers have dropped consecutive games at Texas Tech by one and to Kansas by five at home. Despite their defensive prowess they are a poor shooting team. Just 42.9% with 32.6% from three in the lower third of college hoops.
2:30PM ET—Xavier at Seton Hall (FOX)
Seton Hall -2
Xavier is 5-2 in the Big East and 3-2 on the road. Musketeers have dropped their past two road games in the Big East with losses at Villanova by 23 and Providence by 9.
Seton Hall an experienced team sits 15-4 overall and 4-2 at home. Pirates have been good at home at 11-0. They look to rebound from a 17 point road defeat at Creighton on Wednesday.
4PM ET—Arizona at Stanford (CBS)
Arizona -5
Wildcats is tied with Stanford in the PAC 12 at 5-1 after they crushed California on Wednesday on the road 79-58 covering as a 12.5 favorite. Their only loss in conference came at Colorado by three. Arizona 12th in shooting at 50.5%.
Stanford beat Arizona St Wednesday 86-77 as a 3.5 underdog. It is now a four game win streak since their loss to open PAC 12 play at home to Cal. Freshman Kezie Okpala with more playing time has helped the turnaround as he sat out the first 12 games with academic issues.
4PM ET—Notre Dame at Clemson (ESPN)
Clemson -5
Notre Dame has dropped three straight after an overtime home defeat to Louisville on Tuesday as a 2.5 favorite. Bonzie Colson has been downgraded to out for at least six weeks. Guard DJ Harvey is out with a knee injury
Clemson fell to 4-2 in the ACC with an eight point loss at North Carolina. Tigers are 10-0 at home.
6PM ET—Baylor at Kansas (ESPN)
Kansas -8
Baylor sits 2-4 in the Big 12 and 0-4 on the road. They broke a two game losing streak by beating Oklahoma St at home Monday 76-60 as a 4.5 favorite. They have failed to cover two of three on the road with nine point loss at Iowa St and by 24 at Texas Tech in non-covers.
Kansas sits atop Big 12 at 5-1. Jayhawks moved their win streak to four games by beating West Virginia on the road Monday 71-66 as a six point underdog. They are a good shooting team.
8:15PM ET—Florida at Kentucky (ESPN)
Kentucky -3
Florida sits atop the SEC at 5-1. Gators 2-1 on the road. Team is coming off a 15 point home victory to Arkansas on Wednesday covering as a 6.5 favorite. They have road wins in SEC at Texas A&M and Missouri but a six point defeat at Ole Miss. Florida is 197th in shooting at 44.3%.
Kentucky is 4-2 in the SEC and 11-0 at home. Wildcats look to rebound after a road defeat at South Carolina 76-68 as a one point favorite. They have failed to cover home games in SEC wins against Texas A&M and Georgia.
10PM ET—Boise St at Nevada (ESPNU)
Nevada -8
Nevada sits at 6-0 and in first place in the Mountain West. Wolf Pack is 9-0 at home. Definitely their biggest home test . Wolf Pack has been double digit favorites in their past five games.
Boise St is 6-1 in the Mountain West. Broncos loss came at Fresno St by six as a 3.5 underdog. Broncos have notable road wins at Oregon and UNLV. They dropped a 23 point decision at SMU.
Sunday January 21st
6PM ET—Virginia at Wake Forest (ESPN U)
Virginia -9
Virginia sitting in first place in the ACC at 5-0 as they are in action Thursday at Georgia Tech. They have a notable 26 point win at Virginia Tech.
Wake Forest. 1-4 in the ACC and 5-4 at home. Demon Deacons are in NC State on Thursday losers of three straight. Their ACC win came at home to Syracuse 73-67 as a one point favorite. They are allowing nearly 40% from three.
8PM ET—Washington St at Utah (ESPN U)
Utah -11
Washington St is 1-4 in the PAC 12 and 0-4 on the road. Cougars are in Colorado tonight. They broke a five game losing streak with a 25 point home victory to Cal.
Utah 2-4 in the PAC 12 is hosting Washington tonight. Utes on a four game losing streak after getting blown out at USC and UCLA last week.
