Iowa State vs Arizona State Preview

No. 18-ranked Iowa State (10-2, 7-2 in Big 12) meets No. 16-ranked Arizona State (10-2, 7-2-0 in Big 12) in the 2024 Big 12 Championship Game in Arlington, Texas on Saturday afternoon. The Cyclones come in winners of 3 straight, beating some pretty good teams (KSU, UTAH, CIN) while the Sun Devils have won 5 consecutive (OK ST, UCF, KSU, BYU, AZ) and both made this game from tiebreakers with BYU and Colorado also finishing with a 7-2 record in conference. Both teams lost to Texas Tech this season with Iowa State also losing to Kansas and ASU falling to Cincinnati. Both schools were unbeaten (3-0) in non-conference play.

Last year the Sun Devils were still a member of the Pac-12 Conference. Last season, Texas beat Oklahoma State in this game, 49-21 but now the Longhorns call the SEC home and they will face Georgia in the SEC Championship Game which we will preview for you here later this week. You can find links for the AAC, MWC and MAC championship games below at the bottom of this page.

Iowa State Seeks First Big 12 Championship Saturday

Iowa State (7-5-0, 6-6-0 O/U) gets a crack at its first Big 12 Championship Game with schools like Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M all having left for the SEC. The Cyclones (+105 Moneyline) are led by prolific QB Rocco Becht (3,021 passing yards), RB Carson Hansen (618 rushing yards), and WR Jayden Higgins (1,068 receiving yards) on offense and DBs Beau Freyler (74 tackles) and Jontez Williams (4 Interceptions) on defense. To make it to the 12-team College Football Playoffs, the champion in the Big 12 would have to outrank one of 5 other conference champions. The latest rankings will be revealed on the CFP Rankings show on Tuesday night (ESPN, 7 EST/4 PST). If the Cyclones do win here, expect them to make the inaugural tournament which kicks off on December 20.

Iowa State Betting Trends

  • Iowa State went 7-0 SU to start the season
  • The Cyclones have alternated U/O in the last 8 (UOUOUOUO)
  • The Cyclones went 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games on the Road
  • Iowa State was favored in all 12 games this season
  • QB Becht has thrown for a TD in all 12 games this year

Arizona State Can Make Big 12 History in Year One

Arizona State (10-2-0 ATS, 7-4-1 O/U) has one of the best ATS records in FBS this season and are the first team to be favored over Iowa State all year which is nothing to sneeze at. Winning the Big 12 in the Sun Devils (-125 Moneyline) first year playing in the conference would be quite the feat, and ASU’s just rewards would likely be an auto-berth into the First Round of the CFP and possibly a date with Notre Dame in South Bend. We will see soon enough. The Sun Devils are led by QB Sam Leavitt (2,444 passing yards), RB Cam Skattebo (1,398 rushing yards) and WR Jordyn Tyson (1,011 receiving yards), by the news just came out this afternoon (Monday) that Tyson will miss the game with an injury, so this line may go down a point or so. Having one less dangerous skill position player to worry about will benefit Iowa State and WR Xavier Gullory (5 TD) and TE Chamon Metayer (3 TD) will have to pick up the slack for the Sun Devils.

Arizona State Betting Trends

  • Arizona State is 8-2 SU/ATS in its last 10 overall
  • WR Jordyn Tyson had 10 of the team’s 21 Passing TD
  • The Over is 4-1 in the Sun Devils last 5 games
  • In the last 10 ASU games, the winning team has also covered ATS
  • Arizona State was just 3-9 SU last season in its last as a Pac-12 member

Iowa State vs Arizona State Pick and Prediction

This is the first meeting ever between Iowa State and Arizona State on the gridiron and these two are about as evenly matched as two teams can be. At stake is nothing big—just a ticket to the first-ever CFP, so it’s safe to say this is the most important game in both school’s storied football histories. Arizona State has beaten three ranked teams this season (UTAH, KSU, BYU) and a very good Kansas team, but without star WR Tyson, will have to look for other ways to get points and RB Skattebo will be in high demand. This Iowa State vs Arizona State NCAAF pick will look to the Totals market and expect a tight defensive battle with more FGs than TDs down in Jerry World.
