UNLV vs Boise State Preview

No. 22 UNLV (10-2, 6-1 in MWC) heads to the Gem State, not to steal potatoes, but to lock facemasks with No. 11 Boise State (11-1, 7-0 in MWC) in the 2024 Old Trapper Mountain West Conference Championship Game. The Rebels only 2 losses in the Regular Season came against master-spoilers Syracuse and these Broncos, 29-24 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Boise State’s only setback came to No. 1-ranked Oregon in Eugene, so a win here and odds are the Broncos will make the College Football Playoff. One prediction has Boise State earning as First Round Bye and seeded No. 4 and meeting No. 5-seeded Notre Dame in a CFP Quarterfinal at the Fiesta Bowl, so the losses by Clemson and Miami (ACC), Tulane (AAC), and Ohio State (Big Ten) in Week 14 may have helped the Broncos. UNLV will need to pull off the upset here to have any chance of sneaking into the CFP. The CFP begins on Friday, December 20 (ABC, ESPN, 8 EST/5 PST). The CFP Rankings show will be airing Tuesday night (ESPN, 7 EST/4 PST).

UNLV Looking For a Miracle, Surprise CFP Berth

UNLV (7-5-0 ATS, 6-6-0 O/U) won its 4th straight after falling to Boise State in the Regular Season meeting as the Rebels (+152 Moneyline) held onto the Fremont Cannon once again, beating Silver State rivals Nevada, 38-14 on Saturday in Sin City, its third-straight double-digit victory. Head Coach Barry Odom, QB Hajj-Malik Williams, and WR Ricky White III have the best football team in the state with Nevada an anemic 3-10 SU mark (and 0-7 in MWC play) and NFL’s Raiders 2-10—tied for the worst record in the league with the New York Giants.UNLV has 10 wins while the Wolf Pack and the Silver and Black combined have half as many (5).

UNLV Betting Trends

  • UNLV is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games overall
  • The Under is 2-0 in the Rebels last 2 and 4-2 the last 6 games
  • UNLV is 3-5 ATS in its last 8 overall
  • Rebels have been Favorites in every game this year but 3 (KAN, BOISE 2x)
  • UNLV has alternated ATS Wins/Losses its last 5 (WLWLW)

Boise State Looks to Seal a Spot in First-Ever CFP

Boise State (6-5-1 ATS, 7-5-0 O/U) will look to be the first Group of Five Conference member to make the new 12-team CFP and will hopefully earn a First Round Bye. Besides the MWC, the Group of Five also includes the American Athletic Conference (AAC, Tulane vs Army), Conference USA, the Sun Belt Conference, and the Mid-American Conference (MAC). We will have previews for all 5 Group of Five Championship games here for you this week. The Broncos (-180 Moneyline) will look to unleash RB Ashton Jeanty (2,288 rushing yards, 28 TD, 7.3 ypc) on the Rebels and although it seems his shots at winning the Heisman Trophy (25/1, DraftKings) disappeared last weekend with Travis Hunter’s (-10,000) big game for Colorado, winning here and guaranteeing themselves a Bye and a spot in the final 8 would be enough for this team-oriented player. Boise State has now won 10 straight games since losing to the Ducks in Week 2.

Boise State Betting Trends

  • Boise State is 5-3-1 ATS in its last 9 games overall
  • The Under is 3-1 in the Broncos last 4 games
  • Boise State will be hosting UNLV for the first time since 2016
  • Jeanty has rushed for at least 127 yards in every game this season
  • Boise State is 7-0 SU the last 7 meetings with UNLV

UNLV vs Boise State Pick and Prediction

This UNLV vs Boise State NCAAF pick will back the Broncos laying the 4 points as the Broncos have won the last 7 series meeting and covered ATS in the last 3, winning by 5, 24, and 25. Boise State has also outgained the Rebels in all 7 games, and with this possibly being their last game at The Blue this calendar year, expect the crowd to be raucous and worth a couple of points here. UNLV is used to playing Home games inside at Allegiant Stadium, so the forecasted 40° (kickoff) to 37° (10 pm) temperature will suit the team that shares a border with Canada more than the one who shares a border with Arizona. The closest of the 7 meetings was the 5 in the last one (BOISE 29 UNLV 24), so I’m expecting a 6- to 11-point win in this one unless UNLV can get a +2 TO Margin in the game and catch a few breaks.

This will be the biggest game for the UNLV program in decades, but it is also the biggest one for Boise State with so much at stake. If you don’t like this new CFP, stick your head in the fireplace. Before this, teams like Notre Dame, Army, Tulane, UNLV, and Boise State had absolutely no shot at playing for a national championship. Now they all do.

Kevin’s Pick: Boise State -3.5
