Iowa State vs. Kansas Preview

No. 17 Iowa State (7-1, 4-1 in Big 12) heads down to Kansas City to face Kansas (2-6, 1-4 in Big 12) in yet another Week 11 matchup where we see a notable Road Favorite. Sitting outside the top 12 and the CFP rankings, expect the Cyclones to be focused in this one to see if they can play themselves into the tournament. The Jayhawks have won the last two series meetings here, but Iowa State won the previous seven meetings and Kansas isn’t as good this season as they were in 2023-24. And this game isn’t being played in Lawrence, so the Jayhawks won’t have a real Homefield advantage. To stay in the thick of the Big 12 race and the CFP mix, the Cyclones really need to win this one.

Iowa State

Iowa State (5-3-0 ATS, 4-4-0 O/U) is coming off a tough 23-22 loss to Texas Tech in Ames in a Week 10 game that saw the Cyclones close as big 13.5 point favorites but lose outright at Home for their second setback of the season. Before that, Iowa State had won 7 straight games against some pretty tough Big 12 opponents. Looking at the CFP rankings, we find the Cyclones sitting at No. 17, so winning here is very necessary, especially after losing to the Red Raiders and with Cincinnati, Utah, and Kansas State all coming up to close out the Regular Season schedule. With four straight wins, the Cyclones may be able to blow their way into the CFP bracket, but QB Becht, RB Hansen, and WR Noel will have to be at the top of their games and the D will have to step up.

Iowa State Betting Trends

  • Iowa State has lost 2 straight ATS, after covering its previous 4
  • The Cyclones have alternated O/U in the last 6 (OUOUOU)
  • Iowa State is 7-2 SU in the last 9 series meetings
  • The Cyclones are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games on the Road
  • Iowa State has been favored in at least the last 10 series meetings
  • QB Becht has thrown for a TD in 12 straight games

Kansas Has Nothing to Lose in This Spot

Kansas (2-6-0 ATS, 4-4-0 O/U) is led by QB Daniels, RB Neal, and WR Grimm and the Jayhawks have won the last 2 series meetings after losing the previous 7. There were less than 50 points scored in the two Jayhawks wins and more than 50 on the scoreboard (65, 66, 74) in the Cyclones last 3 wins in this series, so this may come down to how well Kansas can play defense as well as control the pace of the game. The last 5 Jayhawks games have all seen over 50 points (56, 56, 76, 65, 60) and 8 of their last 10 have eclipsed the 50 mark, so with normal weather and the friendly Arrowhead Stadium playing surface, we will probably see both teams over 20 and one with 30 or more. With Iowa State having a +1.12 TO Margin and Kansas at -0.12, the Jayhawks will have to be protective of the football. In this game last year, Kansas led all the way and committed 0 TO’s while Iowa State had 1 and in a one-score game, that can really matter and ISU has an interception in all 8 games so far this 2024-25 NCAAF season.

Kansas Betting Trends

  • Kansas is 2-8 ATS in its last 6 games overall
  • The Jayhawks lead the all-time series 52-45-6
  • Kansas has held ISU to 101 Total Rushing yards last 2 meetings
  • RB Neal is one TD away from setting school record with 42 TD
  • The Over is 4-1 in the last 5 Kansas games
  • CB Bryant has 13 career Interceptions, tied for most of all active players

Iowa State vs Kansas Prediction 11/9/24

Watch Kansas RB Devin Neal in this one, as the Jayhawks will count heavily on his rushing contributions and he is just 7 yards away from setting the school’s all-time Rushing record held by Jun Henley (3,841). With Kansas re-doing its Home stadium in Lawrence, Arrowhead Stadium is serving as its site for Home games, so the added noise and support from the student body won’t be as strong as normal and expect a fair share of Iowa State fans on hand. This Iowa State vs Kansas prediction and free college football pick calls for the Becht and the Cyclones to rebound from last week’s loss and win by 4 to 9 points in a slog as they keep their CFP aspirations alive. This game simply means much more to the Cyclones than it does to the Jayhawks.

Kevin’s Pick: Iowa State -2.5
