Lions vs Packers Preview
The NFC North is suddenly the best division in the NFL with a combined 21-8 record and all four teams over the .500 mark, even after the Bears dreadful loss to the Commanders on a Hail Mary in Week 8. Here we have the biggest game in the division this season with the Lions (6-1 SU, 6-1 ATS) traveling to Green Bay on Sunday afternoon to lock horns with the Packers (6-2 SU, 4-4 ATS) in what is must-watch TV this weekend with both entering this showdown with decent win streaks. Last week, Detroit throttled the Titans, 52-14 at home in the Motor City while the Cheeseheads held off the Jaguars in Jacksonville, 30-27 as backup QB Malik Willis had to relieve in the third quarter when Jordan Love suffered a groin injury. Love is hoping to play on Sunday, but his track record of injuries this season and not practicing this week, makes this an ideal spot to make a case for backing the visitors at the betting window.
QB Goff in a Stone Cold Groove Lately
The Lions have been on a roll lately, led by QB Jared Goff (1,695 passing yards, 13 TDs, 4 interceptions), who has to be in the running for NFL MVP this season. Detroit heads into Brown County winners of five straight and are doing it with a productive offense (33.4 ppg, #1), a very solid and mean defense (19.1 ppg, #8), and a Head Coach who inherited one of the worst teams in the league and who has now turned it into a Honolulu blue, white and silver juggernaut which was one half away from being in the Super Bowl last season. With two talented RBs in Jahmyr Gibbs (591 rushing yards, 6 TDs, 6.4 ypc) and David Montgomery (415 rushing yards, 7 TDs, 4.5 ypc), two very good WRs in Amon-Ra St. Brown (41 receptions, 40 yards, 5 TDs) and Jameson Williams (17 receptions, 361 yards, 3 TDs), and a solid TE in Sam LaPorta (20 receptions, 272 yards, 2 TDs), Goff has the luxury of going to anyone at any time. Detroit (234 PF-134 PA) suffered a huge blow earlier this season when DE Aidan Hutchinson broke his leg, so expect the Lions to go out and look for an edge rusher before the trade deadline.
Lions Betting Trends
- Detroit is 3-0 SU on Road, and has won 5 straight Regular Season Away
- The Lions are 43-18-ATS (70.5%) under Head Coach Dan Campbell
- Detroit has won two straight meetings at Green Bay (54 PF-36 PA)
- The Lions have the second-best ATS record in the NFL at 6-1-0 (IND 7-1)
- Detroit is 7-3-0 ATS last 10 series meetings, and has won 4 of the last 5 SU
- The Lions have won and covered ATS 5 consecutive games (4 Overs, 1 Under)
Packers Up Against it With Love Injury?
With a hobbled Jordan Love (15 TDs, 9 interceptions), Green Bay (216 PF-170 PA) will have its work cut out for them on Sunday as if backup Malik Willis has to play, expecting to score easily and fast will be a big challenge for the hosts. And the Lions have won their last two trips to Lambeau Field and won’t be intimidated and know they can get a stranglehold on the NFC North with a victory here. Love hasn’t been practicing this week, and has said playing is a possibility, but his words don’t sound like those of a confident man ready to play his team’s biggest rival in the biggest game of the year. With all of this in mind, Green Bay RB Josh Jacobs (687 yards, 3 TDs), WR Jayden Reed (31 receptions, 507 yards, 3 TDs) and TE Tucker Kraft (342 yards, 5 TDs) will all have to have big games as will the Packers defense (21.3 ppg).
Packers Betting Trends
- The Packers have 4th-best TO Differential (+7), but Lions are #2 (+10)
- Green Bay is 8-2 SU in its last 10 games at Lambeau Field
- The Packers are 7-11 ATS last 18 games in the 4th Quarter
- Jordan Love is 2-2 SU vs Detroit with 5 TDs and 4 interceptions
- Green Bay has led in 14 of its last 22 games at Halftime
- The Packers have scored last in 5 of their last 6 games at Home
Lions Roaring, Look Like Class of NFC
With both teams coming in on winning streaks, playing good defense, winning the TO battles and playing good football, much of this handicap and Lions vs Packers prediction all comes down to the health and availability of Packers QB Love and the reality the Lions have shown they can win—and play well—in Green Bay. This one should see a lot of points, and with a forecast high of 54° and rain in the forecast, the weather may suit the homeboys more and expect a rabid and loud capacity Cheeseheads crowd. But Detroit has Goff and has simply been playing better football, winning its last five games by 38, 2, 38, 3, and 7 points. So could we be looking at a Chiefs vs Lions Super Bowl in February? With the 49ers, Eagles, and Vikings not looking as good as they were and Love injured, Detroit may just be the team to beat in the NFC now, especially if it can defeat the Packers in this massive divisional showdown on Sunday in Wisconsin.
