A pair of clubs trying to advance in their respective postseason campaigns square off in the finale of an interleague series on the diamond at Golden State.

The Chicago Cubs are now on the road as they complete their three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Angels returned from an early hole in the series opener on Tuesday night to triumph 7-4 and take the series’ first victory.

Can the Angels handle business at home, or will the Cubs bounce back and leave town with a victory? This piece was released before the end of the series middle game on Wednesday night at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

Chicago looks to bounce back after blowing a four-run lead in the series’ first game on Tuesday night.

As of Wednesday, the Cubs had a record of 26-34 and were fourth in the NL Central, 6.5 games behind the Brewers in first place.

Tuesday night, Mike Tauchman and Matt Mervis drove in two runs, while Nico Hoerner had two singles for Chicago. That wasn’t enough, though, as the Cubs blew a 4-0 lead, and subpar relief pitching contributed to the loss.

Despite throwing 4.2 innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on two hits, one walk, and four strikeouts, Hayden Wesneski was not considered in the decision.

The defeat went to bullpen pitcher Brandon Hughes (0-3), who failed to retire a batter while giving up two runs on two hits, two walks, and no strikeouts.

Drew Smyly will take the mound for the Cubs as he makes his 13th start of the year in this game. He enters the game with a record of 5-3, a 3.56 ERA, a 1.112 WHIP, 17 walks, and 57 strikeouts in 65.2 innings pitched.

In his most recent start, which took place on the road against the Padres on Saturday, Smyly was unsuccessful. In 5.2 innings of work, he gave up three runs on seven hits, three walks, and four strikeouts as the Cubs lost 6-0.

Smyly has a 1-2 record, a 5.87 ERA, a 1.63 WHIP, 15.1 innings pitched, seven walks, and 11 strikeouts in his previous three starts.

In this game against the Angels, Smyly made his ninth appearance and seventh start of his career. In 35 innings pitched against them, he is 1-4 with a 5.40 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 17 walks, and 35 strikeouts.

Smyly has four career appearances, three starts, a 1-2 record, a 3.92 ERA, a 1.307 WHIP, eight walks, and 26 strikeouts over 20.2 innings.

Chicago Cubs vs Los Angeles Angels Predictions 6/8/2023

The Los Angeles Angels rallied to win the first game of this series by taking advantage of their chances at the plate.

With a record of 32-30 as of Wednesday, the Angels were nine games behind the Rangers in first place in the AL West and third overall.

Only five hits were recorded by Los Angeles on Tuesday, and no player had more than one. Shohei Ohtani (his 16th) and Taylor Ward (his seventh) scored multiple runs for the victory.

The Angels generated plenty of runners thanks to six walks, one hitter being hit by a pitch, and two errors.

Despite giving up four runs on five hits, three walks, and five strikeouts over five innings, Tyler Anderson (3-1) was victorious.

Carlos Estevez pitched the ninth inning for his fifteenth save, allowing just two hits, no runs, no walks, and two strikeouts.

In this game, Angels pitcher Reid Detmers is making his 11th start of the year on the mound.

He enters with a 5.15 ERA, a 1.539 WHIP, and a record of 0-5. Over 50.2 innings of work this season, there were 60 strikeouts and 21 walks.

Detmers was unsuccessful in his final start, which occurred last Thursday against the Astros while on the road. In five innings, he gave up four runs on six hits, two walks, and two strikeouts as the Angels fell behind 5-2.

Detmers is 0-2 with a 5.74 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, seven walks, and 19 strikeouts over 15.2 innings pitched in his previous three starts. In his 41st big league appearance, Detmers starts his first game against the Cubs.

In this game, he makes his 21st career start at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. In those appearances, Detmers is 5-6 with a 3.99 ERA, 1.172 WHIP, 38 walks, and 111 strikeouts in 108.1 innings pitched.

Chicago Cubs vs Los Angeles Angels. The Los Angeles Angels are the MLB’s selection to win this match. It has been challenging to get a good read on both teams over the season’s first two months because of their ups and downs.

Smyly has lost his previous two starts, but he has thrown effectively this season, giving the Cubs a reliable middle-of-the-rotation arm.

Detmers has had a difficult season and is now without a victory to his name and sporting an ERA of over five. Given what we’ve seen in previous games, it’s difficult to be optimistic about the Angels’ chances with him on the mound.

The Cubs’ bullpen has had issues, as we witnessed once more on Tuesday night, but the visitors’ bats should be able to score enough runs against Detmers to give them the win they were supposed to receive at 7-3.
