The Oakland Athletics dropped all three of their matches against the New York Mets over the course of the weekend, making it nine losses in a row.

Due to a 2-7 home record, Oakland currently is in last place in the AL West heading into Monday’s games.

Oakland was thoroughly outplayed on Friday night and lost by 11 runs, but the remaining two games versus New York saw much superior pitching, with a combined seven runs allowed.

This Oakland pitching staff was dreadful, ranking last in baseball with an ERA of 7.60 and a WHIP of 1.67. The starters’ ERA over the previous five games is 7.77, while the relievers’ is 6.10.

This is appalling. The game will be started by left-hander Ken Waldichuk, who had a difficult season thus far, finishing 0-2 with a 10.20 ERA in three appearances. In his previous start, the lefty gave up three runs in 6.1 innings.

Through his first 8.2 frames, he gave up 14 runs. Oakland has 16 home runs, but they only scored 62 runs and are hitting just.235 as a team.

Over their last five games, they made some progress, averaging 5.09 runs per game while hitting .279 with a .371 on-base percentage. Sadly, it was not enough to make up for this awful pitching staff.
