Colorado Rockies vs San Diego Padres 3/31/2023 Picks Predictions Previews

The Colorado Rockies will go against the San Diego Padres in MLB action in Petco Park, CA, on Friday, March 31, 2023, at 9:40 PM ET.

Colorado had a terrible season in 2022 since they were towards the bottom of the NL West; they did not achieve a divisional position better than fourth since 2018.

The Rockies enjoyed a quiet winter because they had the biggest salary in team history when it came time to start shopping. Late in the spring, Jurickson Profar signed a one-year contract, adding another seasoned bat to the lineup.

The Rockies also made several significant signings in free agency for the pitching staff, including reliever Pierce Johnson, starter Jose Urena, and pitcher Brad Hand.

To add to their arsenal, Colorado traded for Brent Suter and Connor Seabold. As Carlos Estevez and Alex Colome left the Rockies in free agency, they had to replace the back end of their bullpen.

In this game, Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland makes his 2023 season debut on the mound.

He made 31 starts for Colorado last year and finished with a 9-11 record, 4.53 ERA, 1.408 WHIP, 53 walks, and 131 strikeouts in 174.2 innings pitched.

He has that going for him here since last season, he pitched significantly better on the road (4-5, 3.08 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 28 walks, 72 strikeouts over 87.2 innings in 15 starts) than at Coors Field.

  • The Colorado Rockies are 3-2 in their last 5 matches against the spread.
  • The Colorado Rockies are 37-43 in their road matches against the spread.
  • The totals went OVER in 1 of the Rockies’ last 5 matches.

Colorado Rockies vs San Diego Padres Predictions 3/31/2023

Last year, San Diego made several significant additions, including Josh Hader and Juan Soto, before the trade deadline.

The club proceeded to the NL Championship Series before losing to the Phillies thanks to such adjustments, which also helped the team secure a wild card place.

San Diego signed Xander Bogaerts to an 11-year, $280 million contract throughout the summer, continuing their activeness.

They added arms in Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo, as well as seasoned batters Nelson Cruz and Matt Carpenter.

While negotiating extensions with Manny Machado and Yu Darvish, San Diego also renewed contracts with Robert Suarez and Nick Martinez.

With Mike Clevinger, Sean Manaea, and Pierce Johnson leaving the pitching staff from the previous year, there were some setbacks in the summer.

Josh Bell, Brandon Drury, Wil Myers, Jurickson Profar, and Jorge Alfaro are among the batters that left the Padres, but the team still has a wealth of potential.

The beginning of the season will be a little challenging since Darvish is coming up to speed after pitching for Japan in the World Baseball Classic and because Drew Pomeranz, Joe Musgrove, and Suarez all began the year on the injured list.

With several starters out of the lineup, Nick Martinez is taking the mound for the Padres to get 2023 off to a good start.

After spending the previous four seasons in Japan, he made 47 appearances, 10 of which were starts, for San Diego last season, compiling a 4-4 record with 8 saves, a 3.47 ERA, a 1.288 WHIP, 41 walks, and 95 strikeouts over 106.1 innings of work. In this game, Martinez will make his ninth appearance and fourth start against the Rockies.

  • The San Diego Padres are 2-3 in their last 5 matches against the spread.
  • The San Diego Padres are 42-39 in their road matches against the spread.
  • The totals went OVER in 2 of the Padres’ last 5 matches.

Colorado Rockies vs San Diego Padres. The MLB pick for this game is the San Diego Padres.

Even if the absence of players like Musgrove and Darvish caused problems for the Padres’ pitching staff, the reality remains that their lineup is quite well-packed with great depth.

In contrast, the Rockies struggled offensively as a road club last season, extending the glaring split difference from playing at Coors Field. Colorado is the visiting team, and they don’t exactly exude confidence.

Last year, Freeland pitched well on the road, but this year, he’ll have trouble because of the lack of offensive assistance.

Martinez performs admirably, and the Padres’ offense does its part to give the home team the win. The San Diego Padres will win to a predicted score of 7-5.
