The Colorado Rockies will go against the Kansas City Royals in MLB action in Las Vegas Ballpark, Las Vegas, NV, on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 4:10 PM ET. The Colorado Rockies are having trouble lately.

Midway through the 2010s, they were competitive, but ultimately moved superstar Nolan Arenado, which contributed to their demise. It also didn’t help that Trevor Story left.

There are grounds for optimism even though their chances of contending for a playoff position in 2023 are minimal. People seem to overlook how effective Kris Bryant was on the field in 2022.

Bryant’s 2022 season, in the opinion of many MLB fans, was a disappointing year. Yet the biggest concern was injury, however, he had good numbers for Colorado.

Through 42 matches, the former Chicago Cubs great had a slash line of.306/.376/.475 with an OPS of.851. Bryant should be able to succeed in 2023 after hitting Colorado.

The Rockies do, however, hope that he can play more consistently this year than he did last. One of the main return items in the Nolan Arenado trade was Austin Gomber.

But, Gomber struggled as a pitcher with the Rockies up to this point, and his place in the rotation going into 2023 is in doubt. The fact that pitchers toil at Coors Field should be emphasized.

The steep elevation prevents them from getting as much zip on their pitches, giving hitters an advantage. But, Gomber’s 2022 was utterly terrible.

The lowest walk rate in his career was recorded by Gomber. Also, he regularly forced ground balls. Both of those provide grounds for optimism that Gomber will succeed in 2023.

Will he compete for the NL Cy Young Award? Most likely not. But, it won’t be impossible for him to pitch for the Rockies with a decent ERA. Gomber should finally find his footing because of his reasonably high ceiling.

When Daniel Bard agreed to an extension with Colorado, he surprised a lot of people in the baseball community.

Bard signed a two-year contract before the trade deadline last year, which was surprising considering many teams were thought to be interested in trading for him.

Yet, Colorado is a difficult place for pitchers to succeed, so the Rockies wanted to hang onto their top closer. Last year, he saved 34 matches and received some MVP votes.
