The A’s head into this season after a dismal, but expected, last-place finish in 2022. They are hoping one more year into their rebuild and one year closer to playing competitive baseball.

Despite the impression that Oakland is rarely competitive, the team made the postseason six times since 2010. That’s not at all awful for a market the size of Oakland.

Not great, but not awful. Only a few of Oakland’s offseason moves that may affect their major league roster were aggressive.

The year 2023 will see roles for Trevor May, Kyle Mueller, Manny Pina, Jesus Aguliar, Jace Peterson, Aledmys Diaz, Esteury Ruiz, and JJ Bleday. From Japan, Shintaro Fujinami was brought over and will join the rotation.

The 2022 All-Star Paul Blackburn had a tremendous first half, compiling a 3.62 ERA with improved pitches all around. The second half was ugly, raising more concerns than it did answers about his level of effectiveness.

Kaprielian does not have great stuff, but a four-pitch combination with reasonable success. Waldichuk (the No. 60 prospect) made his debut in 2022, tossing 34.2 innings and compiling an ERA of 4.93.

He isn’t a 100 mph guy because he needs to have excellent movement to strike out batters. He showed the potential to strike batters out while still struggling with direction at times.
