San Diego Padres vs Cleveland Guardians 3/9/2023 Picks Predictions Previews
The San Diego Padres will go against the Cleveland Guardians in MLB action in Goodyear Ballpark Goodyear, AZ, on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at 4:05 PM ET.
Although Juan Soto’s transition to San Diego did not go as well as he hoped, his teammates were there to support him.
Soto’s hitting average fell noticeably when compared to his time with the Washington Nationals, as he only batted.242 last season and.236 in 52 matches with the Padres.
The next phase is raising his batting average and on-base percentage since he accrued the most walks over the last couple of seasons.
The task for San Diego is to win at least one World Series championship before there is a potential for him to quit because his contract expires in 2024.
As the Padres spent a ton of future assets on Soto, his prospects of remaining in San Diego for the foreseeable future will be improved by his winning an MVP and making another long run in the postseason.
With the people batting behind him every night and the power and plate discipline that he has, Soto’s stats will inevitably rise to MVP-like numbers for 2023 once more.
- The San Diego Padres are 2-3 in their previous 5 meetings against the spread.
- The San Diego Padres are 42-39 in their previous road meetings against the spread.
- The totals went OVER in 2 of the Padres’ last 5 matches.

San Diego Padres vs Cleveland Guardians Predictions 3/9/2023
With a K% of 17.3%, Cleveland has the lowest K% since the Astros in 2017.
They didn’t hit for power, which ultimately proved to be their downfall in the postseason, but they did get on base, used speed to produce runs, and applied pressure on the defense.
They were the league leaders in going first to third on singles and finished third with 119 stolen bases. In terms of runners scoring with fewer than two outs from third, they were fourth.
They also were 30th out of 30 teams in terms of Hard Hit%, 1.1% worse than the terrible A’s. They came in dead last in both barrel percentage and average exit velocity.
Cleveland’s contact quality was quite bad, but their percentage of contact was excellent. Contact quality is a key component of my handicapping. They and their tactics would appear to benefit from the new rules.
They were 21st in slugging percentage but ranked seventh in batting average.
José Ramirez still had a fantastic season with 29 home runs, 20 steals, and a 139 wRC+, but he had 19 home runs at the All-Star Break and only 10 after it due to a thumb injury.
Josh Naylor had a terrific season with a 117 wRC+ and hit 20 home runs. With 6.1 fWAR, a.297/.371/.466 slash, a 140 wRC+, and outstanding second base defense, Andres Gimenez became a breakout star.
- The Cleveland Guardians are 3-2 in their last 5 matches against the spread.
- The Cleveland Guardians are 46-34 in their road matches against the spread.
- The totals went OVER in 5 of the Guardians’ last 5 matches.
San Diego Padres vs Cleveland Guardians. The MLB pick for this game is the San Diego Padres.
The topic of who will win the NL West in 2023 was debatable in a recent episode of Baseball Tonight with Buster Olney and Paul Hembikides.
Olney predicts that although the Los Angeles Dodgers will win, the San Diego Padres will progress further in the postseason.
That opinion seems ideal, especially given San Diego’s inexperience, but they will be a flawless regular-season team. The San Diego Padres will win to a predicted score of 4-2.
