The #13 Virginia Cavaliers will meet with the Pittsburgh Panthers in NCAAB action in Petersen Events Center, PA, on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at 9:00 PM ET.

This year, Virginia got off to a fantastic start, going 8-0 through its first eight games. In November, the Cavaliers defeated then-No. 19 Illinois, then-No. 5 Baylor, and Michigan.

In the middle of December, they suffered their only two defeats of the season, losing to Miami and Houston, both ranked 22 and 5 at the time.

In response to those defeats, Virginia defeated Albany and Georgia Tech handily. In their victory over Georgia Tech, the Cavaliers were 9-point favorites, marking their first time covering the spread in eight contests.

They had a season-high 14 steals, caused 23 errors, and took control of the match with a 25-0 run in the middle of it.

Tony Bennett, the head coach, has a chance to surpass Terry Holland’s prior victory total for the school.

Eight matches between these two teams were won by the Cavaliers, including a victory over Pittsburgh in January of last year by a score of 66-61.

Since 2017, they have not lost against Pittsburgh. According to KenPom’s modified offensive efficiency ratings, Virginia is ranked No. 16 and shoots 52.7% from beyond the arc and 51.3% from the 2-point range.

Pittsburgh’s defense is ranked No. 56 in terms of opponents’ field goal percentage when Virginia plays them.

Virginia’s senior big Jayden Gardner scores 12.0 points per contest, followed by senior guard Kihei Clark with 11.5 points and 5.8 assists.

  • The Virginia Cavaliers are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 matches against Pittsburgh.
  • The Virginia Cavaliers are 8-0 SU in their last 8 matches against Pittsburgh.
  • The total went OVER in 5 of Virginia’s last 6 matches on the road.

Virginia Cavaliers vs Pittsburgh Panthers Predictions 1/3/2023

Pittsburgh’s season got off to a sluggish start, dropping 3 consecutive contests in the middle of November against West Virginia, Michigan, and VCU.

After that, the Panthers played outstandingly, winning nine of their last ten games. Their lone defeat during that run was against Vanderbilt, where the Commodores prevailed 75-74 thanks to a last-second shot.

Since then, Pittsburgh rallied with four straight victories, defeating No. 25 North Carolina and Syracuse.

Blake Hinson added 7 points in the final 88 seconds, while Jamarius Burton finished with a career-high 31 points on 14 of 17 shooting. With 1:28 left, Hinson made a 3-pointer to break the 67-67 deadlock.

For the first time since 2015–16, the Panthers are unbeaten to this point in a conference season. They rank No. 202 nationally in turnover rate, so the fact that they only turned the ball over 8 times against North Carolina was a significant improvement.

Pittsburgh shoots 34.2% from beyond the arc and 53.9% from within the arc. The Virginia defense, which is ranked No. 19 in adjusted efficiency, will be tested by the Panthers.

Both of these squads are among the top 20 nationally in that category, making them two of the most seasoned groups in the nation.

Burton scores 15.8 points a game, while Hinson leads Pittsburgh with 17.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest. Both senior guards Greg Elliott (10.8) and Nelly Cummings (11.1) had double-digit scoring totals.

  • The Pittsburgh Panthers are 9-0 ATS in their last 9 matches.
  • The total went OVER in 4 of Pittsburgh’s last 5 matches.
  • The Pittsburgh Panthers are 9-1 SU in their last 10 matches.

#13 Virginia Cavaliers vs Pittsburgh Panthers. The NCAAB pick for this game is the Pittsburgh Panthers. Virginia had a great start to the season, but the betting market greatly overvalued the team.

Pittsburgh was a very different story, as they won nine consecutive matches while covering the spread. The Panthers have some extra momentum going into this game after a strong victory over a rated club.

They’ll be playing in front of a boisterous crowd, so it is exciting to support them as the home underdogs. Only three of Virginia’s games this season were on the road, and one of those was a defeat at Miami.

The Pittsburgh Panthers will win to a predicted score of 68-62.
