Regarding the Longhorns, who are returning from a 5-7 finish in 2021 and a 3-6 Big 12 record. On the Texas side, they had a difficult Big 12 previous season and had difficulty finding any success.

The Longhorns finished 2021 with an overall record of 5-7 and a conference record of 3-6. Texas was thus placed in front of TCU, Texas Tech, and Kansas in the standings, barely three spaces above the bottom three.
