While New York did manage to win their preseason opener, the truth remains that the success came at a cost. With tackle Mekhi Becton out for the remainder of the season due to a second knee injury, the Jets were forced to sign Duane Brown off the free agency market to fill the void.
Zach Wilson, the Jets’ starting quarterback, suffered a knee injury in the first preseason game. He underwent surgery and is at best iffy to start the regular season next month.
The Jets lost 14-0 after the first quarter, 14-3 at the half, and 14-10 after three quarters as things turned out. A five-yard touchdown throw from Chris Streveler to Calvin Jackson with 16 seconds left gave them the victory after trailing 21-17 after leading 17-14 in the fourth quarter.
Before suffering a knee injury, Zach Wilson was three of five for 23 yards and an interception while adding seven yards on the run.
Mike White completed 10 of 20 passes for 98 yards, while Streveler completed 6 of 9 passes for 68 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 31 running yards.
La’Mical Perine had 10 carries for 51 yards to lead the ground game. Breece Hall, a first-round pick, and Zonovan Knight, a sixth-round pick, both received more action in the game than Michael Carter II, the starter from the previous year (three carries, five yards).
Watching to see if Hall replaces Carter II at the top of the food chain will be intriguing.
