The issue is that they are in the same division as the dominant Yankees as well as the Red Sox and Blue Jays, two more elite clubs.

All four are likely to advance to the playoffs. They enter this contest with a 3-0 victory against the pitiful Pittsburgh Pirates, improving their record to 40-32, which has them tied for third with the Blue Jays and 1.5 matches behind the Red Sox, 12.5 games behind the Yankees.

A starter on Tuesday was not chosen by the Rays. If Jalen Beeks receives the call now, he could end up ascending the hill on Tuesday. Although he isn’t included on the injury report, the Yankees did beat him up the previous time he played.
