New Jersey at Dallas NHL Pick Prediction 4/9/2022

Devils: In one of those re-scheduled contests originally lost due to COVID-19 from earlier in the season, New Jersey must travel halfway across the country to play here in Dallas.

At least the Devils gain an hour going westbound, but this team is already tired.

Perhaps “too tired” is a better answer to why we gave the Total against Montreal as one of major Over plays of the season, asking you to forget going over 6.5, 7 or even 7.5, instead stating that going to an off-shore book and laying even 9 goals at huge plus-money would win.

At a final score of 7-4 for an 11, we won plenty of cash on a night when we had yet another winning record of well-above .500 (without stupid -200 favorites like other websites preach as “winning.”)

And now, the injury to standout forward Jack Hughes is worse than originally believed, out of the season with a knee injury.

To be fair, it probably isn’t a super-freakish, end-of-career type of injury, but at 1,000 games under .500, why not place Hughes on the shelf for the summer and save his career.

The NJD press conference states the injury is “a low-grade MCL sprain of his left knee.” One good break: t’s wasn’t a break (i,e,, a tear).

Thus, NJD has no offensive punch, the ‘D’ is listless, and there’s nothing to play for.

Stars: Dallas is in the hunt for a playoff berth, whether it’s an automatic spot for a third-place finish or one of two wild cards.

Yes, they lost last night (at home) to Toronto, but it was a nice third-period comeback to at least gain a point before falling in overtime.

Prediction: As compared to the NJD situation, since the line is so high, take the STARS in a parlay situation with 2 or 3 other sides at -200 or higher and put together a round-robin.

Washington at Pittsburgh NHL Pick Prediction 4/9/2022

Capitals: Ever since it became clear that D.C. will finish eighth in the playoff chase, the Caps look like an NBA team: putting in the work, but at less than 100 percent effort.

Want proof? D.C. is 1-1 ATS, 2-2 ATS, 3-3 ATS, 4-4 ATS… get the idea?

For now, there is only one focus: Allow Alex Ovechkin to score seven goals over the final dozen games to reach a milestone 50 for the season.

Penguins: It’s been reported that former famous Penguins have “suddenly” showed up at practice or out-of-town games to talk to this club.

The talk might be obvious: “Didn’t worry about the regular season. It’s all about the playoffs. It doesn’t matter which team you play. Just work on your game and don’t worry about the results.”

And that’s how the Pens have played since these discussions started about 10 days ago.

The team looks great. They’re scoring goals. Special teams are solid. But playing at less than 100 percent focus and work rates, they’re losing the close games.

I agree. Don’t worry about it. And I will reconsider better on you (heavily!) Stanley Cup time.

Prediction: They don’t really care who wins, so why should we? This is a game for the Props. Side: PASS.

Props: Take Ovechkin at OVER 3.5 shots. Also, take the YES at +300 that the game will head into overtime, thus, both managements are happy they registered a (cosmetic) point in the standings.

Ottawa at NY Rangers NHL Pick Prediction 4/9/2022

Senators: Like Columbus and Detroit, Ottawa skaters are still playing hard for contracts and are giving opponents a tough time.

Although Nashville survived them last night, can the Sens give the same effort on back-to-back nights when they visit MSG.

On-ice results say they can, and goalie Matt Murray (neck) has cleared waivers and was assigned to the Belleville (AHJ) Senators, so both young goalies now have the job for the balance of the season, with Anton Forsberg leading the way (.919 SvPct.).

Rangers: The Blue Shirts were in a perfect scheduling situation to fall to Pittsburgh, ye won anyway — one of our few losses.

Goalie Igor Shesterkin continues to sparkle and the MSG crowds love the kid — could he really win the Vezina Trophy?

However, since the Ranger shutout Carolina on Mar.20, they team has allowed 27 goals in seven games (one shy of 4 per game) until beating NJD, 3-1, two nights ago. Thus, the goaltender may not be quite as good as believed.

Prediction: Heavy chalk on NYR and determined visitors makes the Puck Line a poor play. Just throw the RANGERS into a round-robin parlay with their clubs in the same -200 or higher position.

Anaheim at Philadelphia NHL Pick Prediction 4/9/2022

Ducks: Following a long streak (winning or or losing), one indicator for a team’s near-future success isn’t the game that snapped the string, it’s the two or three afterward.

For Anaheim, that result is a pair of home losses to Edmonton and Calgary. And now they get to travel back east to meet Philadelphia. Ugh.

The Ducks offense is putrid — or any synonym of your choice — while John Gibson receives no help in goal.

We wish Pat Verbeek, the new general manager, much luck in his rebuilding efforts.

Flyers: As I vividly recall, Mike Yeo, first a head coach in Minnesota, was improving the St. Louis Blues, but then was fired just 19 games into the 2018-19 season.

Yeo takes an assistant coach position with the Flyers, while the Blues beat Boston to claim its first Stanley Cup.

So what’s Yeo supposed to do in Philly. Get the team get better so he can be fired once again? Why not hire a winner immediately because his current 14 wins in 48 games (14-32 ATS) is among the lowest current win rates in the NHL.

Prediction: It’s the fault of both ownership groups these clubs stink. Don’t bother to wager on this one. Send the teams and the league a message. PASS.

Montreal at Toronto NHL Pick Prediction 4/9/2022

Canadiens: It may not be the re-birth of The Flying Frenchmen, but it’s well known that management will allow the players to look like a pick-up game with lots of scoring — but you better help the goalie or you’ll be benched. It’s a fair trade-off considering you’re holding up the rest of the Atlantic Division — these jokers played in the Stanley Cup Final(s) last season?

The result was Thursday’s wild 11-goal game in New Jersey… which we gave you as one of best Over plays of the season — we knew!

Montreal is flying high (relatively speaking), so consecutive road games in New Jersey and Toronto shouldn’t hurt as much since the pressure is off and….

Maple Leafs: … The pressure is on Toronto to somehow fight to gain a second-place finish and the home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Y’see, this is a bad omen because club management simply doesn’t get it. They keep pressing for wins like, like, like… are they betting on the club?

Meanwhile, clubs like Pittsburgh are being encouraged to tone it down a notch to save their best efforts for the postseason.

This means the Leafs, when they are the right side, should more likely be a Puck Pline play. If you want to GUESS when that is, be my guest.

Prediction: Of course, Toronto is a -200 or higher favorite. Of course, they will probably win. But this is a rivalry contest, and like in college football, emotion matters and the analytics can be thrown into the trash. The better option sounds like the OVER and let this guy’s skate all over the rink all night.

NY Islanders at St. Louis NHL Pick Prediction 4/9/2022

Isles: Streaking Long Island won five straight before falling in Dallas, yet rebound to win in Carolina last night.

Still, a fifth straight road game in nine nights — including this back-to-back spot –may be too much for even this team.

There was some minor scheduled changes, so the goal rotation may have change, so check on which goalie(s) will start,

Plus, with the old schedule, the Islanders would’ve been in the middle of two days off on the road, playing golf in Hilton Head or somewhere close by in North Carolina.

Obviously, a club in good form, but how the games will effect them in an unknown.

Blues: Likewise, St. Louis was supposed to play Minnesota, but instead came an Eastern Conference fow.

The Blues are also playing well at 6-0-1 SU (6-1 ATS) in L7, including Friday’s nice come from behind victory in overtime against St. Louis.

Prediction: Too many unknowns here, including the starting goalies. However, since neither of these teams are known to play the “I’ll rub your back, you rub mine” game, perhaps they will “rub” and allow this game to go into overtime. Thus, a small play on the YES that the game will be tied after 60 minutes might be a fun bet for pizza money — cheese, not sausage.

Florida at Nashville NHL Pick Prediction 4/9/2022

Panthers: On Feb. 22, Florida was irked by a loss to Nashville which upset them enough to pace the return game here with a giant circle on the calendar.

In a contest held in South Beach, the Panthers held a 3-1 lead, only to watch the Preds pull even at the end of the second period.

So in the third, Florida took another lead at 3-2, then the curtain fell on them. Nashville, one of the league leaders in short-handed goals, got a 4-on-5 tally to tie.

A stupid penalty followed, leading to a Nashville power play goal, then after hitting the goal post in the closing minutes, Florida scores an empty-net goal with 92 second left.

Obviously, the Panthers were not pleased, as Smash-ville’s Tanner Jean not scored goals No. 4 and 6.

Predators: Captain Roman Josi just became the franchise’s single-season scoring leaders with 87 points, two better than the mark set by Paul Kariya.

Could 100 points too far away, needing 13 additional points over the final dozen games.

Since Vegas has so few contests remaining, more and more it seems the Predators will advance to the playoffs as either on the two wild cards or as a third place team. Hard-charging Vancouver is just too far back.

Since Nashville won the first meeting between the clubs, the Preds have been as hot as any National League team, winning at a rate of 13-7 SU/ATS.

Interestingly, Smashville has played beyond 60 minutes just twice since mid-January.

Prediction: Late interconference action means a look at a 60-minute draw at +300, and major revenge means the PANTHERS on the road may be the best choice and the value pick wrapped together in a tidy gift.

Colorado at Edmonton NHL Pick Prediction 4/9/2022

Oilers (H): Last chance for Edmonton to play catch-up and contend for the division title… but against the conference’s other division leader.

This would be a tough task in either barn.

The Oilers have won six straight, but barely. Three games went into overtime or beyond, two others were 1-goal games, while the remaining contest was a romp over San Jose.

And now EDM is home for just one games before leaving for the Stars again, meaning six games in six cities over an 11-day period.

On The plus side, the Oilers were able to win backup goalie Mike Smith in the net against L.A., so Mikko Koskinen will be primed for a return in seeking his 39th victory of the season.

Avalanche: Colorado won the first meeting earlier in this calendar year, but now need to visit Oil City twice in two weeks, a rink they should be used to playing in after Edmonton served as a “bubble” location during the pandemic.

The Avs are assured of the No 1 playoff berth in the West, but could still earn a second straight President’s Trophy, if they desire to put in the effort.

Also, if Edmonton starts to slip from second place, a fourth-place finish is still possible, meaning these side could meet in the first round.

Prediction: If both teams play at 100 percent, the slightly hotter team is Edmonton, but not by enough for me to wager on. And it’s a playoff preview, the Under looks to be in contention. I’ll take the side with the better defense… the AVS.

Calgary at Seattle NHL Pick Prediction 4/9/2022

Kraken (H): Thank you for all of the kind words (and tip!!!) for selecting Seattle in a road triumph in Chicago.

We offered three solid reasons why the Blackhawks would slip up, so a solid payoff at plus-money is always enjoyable.

However, a repeat effort against a division leader who has been slipping a touch of late would seem too much of a task.

And since Seattle can give up a goal or two in the first period, while Calgary prem scores early, the OVER-1st PERIOD seems quite reasonable and affordable.

At home Seattle is 3-3 SU/AYS in L6, defeating Nashville, Dallas and Detroit — not too bad!

Flames: The loss of Sean Monahan can not be over-states. And although Calgary ran that emotional wave to win a game or two for him, the high can end abruptly, so a play on Seattle, which is on a high, may be an interesting selection.

Calgary just swept the California Triangle and is 5-1-1 SU (5-2 ATS) in L7.

Prediction: One constant for Calgary: they always seem to score at least three (usually four) goals per game. And since Seattle’s defense is still a work in progress, why not the… OVER.

Arizona at Vegas NHL Pick Prediction 4/9/2022

Golden Knights: The numbers are too obvious; the key injuries keep mounting; and there goaltending may need a complete re-working before next season.

Indeed, a magician run of four straight playoff berth, three conference finals and a Stanley Cup final berth will end in the next week or so, so a look at the lowly Arizona Coyotes is now a reasonable play.

Remember, this is not a fan website, it’s a site to gain knowledge in order to place winning wagers. So if you remember me from my old (defunct) home in southern Nevada, I don’t make such harsh statements lightly about the “Go’Knights!”

Yes, mathematically, VGK remains in the playoff mix, but watching a 5-game winning streak end badly in a 5-1 setback to Vancouver may have been the final blow before hitting the golf course.

Coyotes: Early in the season, Arizona fell to VGK, 7-1, then bounced back for a 3-1 win — for you baseball fans, this is the rubber game.”

How low has this franchise been relocating from Winnipeg? This season’s current points leader, layton Keller, has 63 points, snapping the Phoenix/Arizona only record of 64 by Keith Tkachuk set in 1996-97 — folks, that aint too many PTS.

Prediction: VGK has been steady at home at 5-0 until the Vancouver debacle. And with only the home games left — the fewest in the National League –hope for a playoff berth is, realistically, all gone… Upset Special time… COYOTES.

San Jose at Vancouver NHL Pick Prediction 4/9/2022

Sharks: San Jose went to barbecues weeks ago. Vancouver isn’t quite really to thaw out the swimming pool, sitting just four points behind Vegas for fifth place.

Canucks: Should Vancouver climb just one or two more spots in the standings, coach of the year voting will be interesting between VAN’s Bruce Boudreau (26-13-8) and Todd McLellan (38-25-10) of the L.A. Kings…

Take it to the Vanc… CANUCKS.
