The Tigers had a bad month in April. In April, they scored just 8 of their 27 matches, giving them the poorest record in baseball. When so many factors were going wrong, such as the Detroit pitchers’ 5.08 ERA and the offense’s .199 average, it was difficult to pinpoint a single issue.
Fortunately for the Tigers, they began to improve, and 4 of the next 5 months saw them achieve a winning record. It became evident that the rebuilding in Detroit could be coming to a halt.
This offseason, the Tigers had two key objectives: sign a solid shortstop and a trustworthy starting pitcher. After signing Javier Baez to a large 6-year contract and Eduardo Rodriguez to a 5-year contract, Detroit was able to cover both of those requirements in only a few weeks.
Baez had a difficult start in 2021, hitting just .248 with the Cubs, but he exploded in New York, hitting .299 in 47 matches. His main flaw is his high strikeout rate, as he struck out in over 36% of at-bats in 2021, which doesn’t bode well for the Tigers offense, which ranked fourth in strikeouts.
