After dropping two consecutive matches, the Marquette Golden Eagles dropped out of the top 25 this week. They dropped 80-72 as 6 point favorites at UConn, which is fair because UConn is ranked in the top 25, but they then dropped 85-79 as 3.5 point favorites at Butler on Saturday, which is unacceptable.

They finished fifth in the Big East with a record of 16-9 overall and 8-6 in conference play. They’re now on the bubble, so they’ll need to finish well to earn a berth in the Big Dance.

In an 85-79 defeat at Butler on Saturday, I wouldn’t call their effort strong. They barely shot 44% and were thrashed on the boards. Justin Lewis had a big game, scoring 27 points and grabbing 9 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough. Tyler Kolek scored 17 points and three steals, while Greg Elliot had 13 points and three steals.
