After beating Mercer in the regular-season finale to capture the Southern Conference, East Tennessee State anticipated their destiny on Selection Sunday with bated breath. The screen aired clips of the Buccaneers’ playoff run as the seventh seed.

The Buccaneers handily defeated Vanderbilt on the first weekend of college football and went on to dominate the rest of the Southern Conference.

In-state foe Chattanooga handed them their only setback of the season. They were playing at their level throughout the game. This weekend, they’ll try to escape the same fate.

East Tennessee State’s attack is led by two players: running backs Quay Holmes and Jacob Saylors. Holmes boasts 1431 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground, while Saylors boasts 968 yards and 10 touchdowns.

This season, they are the top pair in the FCS. The duo’s greatest performance came in a win over Western Carolina when both backs rushed for over 200 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Saylors also has a kick return average of slightly under 30 yards. With only 194 yards per game, quarterback Tyler Riddell isn’t heavily relied on in the passing game, but he keeps the ball safe with 16 touchdowns and only three interceptions.
