The Siena Saints are preparing to meet the No. 23 ranked St. Bonaventure Bonnies in NCAA basketball action at the Reilly Center, St. Bonaventure in New York this Tuesday night.

The Siena Saints concluded the 2020-21 NCAA Division I men’s basketball season with a 12-5 record.  The Saints were led by Carmen Maciariello in his second year as head coach. In the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the team managed to post a 12-4 mark, which earned them the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

Siena was able to make it as far as first place, where they finished in a tie, but lost to the ninth seed Iona Gaels by a close score of 52-55.

Returning seniors to the team are Michael Baer, Nick Hopkins, Robert Mahala, Jackson Stormo, and Michael Tertsea.  While five older players are making a comeback, two others have ended up on the injured list and may not be able to participate in the games just yet.

Moreover, with three top scorers gone from the roster, Stormo is the lone double-digit scorer returning to Siena.  The forward scores an average of 10.8 points, along with 5.5 rebounds per contest.

To compensate for the loss, Siena recruited freshman Javian McCollum, who was dubbed by Maciariello as a combo of Doremus Bennerman, the second top scorer, and Ronald Moore, an all-time assists leader.

At the end of the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, the team finished the previous season with a 16-5 record under the supervision of head coach Mark Schmidt in his 14th year.

Furthermore, the team participated in the Atlantic 10 Conference, in which they finished with an 11-4 mark to claim the championship of the regular season.  The Bonnies swept through Duquesne Dukes, the Saint Louis Billikens, and the VCU Rams.

Consequently, St. Bonaventure earned the ticket to play in the East region as the ninth seed, however fell through to the LSU Tigers during the first round.

Coach Schmidt will be entering his 15th year at St. Bonaventure and each of his five starters mustered an average of double figures in scoring in the previous season.

Guard Kyle Lofton was nabbed as the top shooter for the Bonnies with an average of 14.4 points per contest along with a total of 5.5 assists, followed by Jaren Holmes with 13.8.  The leading rebounder, and also a double-digit scorer, was forward Osun Osunniyi with 9.4 rebounds per contest.

With Kyle Lofton and Jalen Adaway being injured, Jaren Holmes, Osun Osunniyi, and Dominick Welch are the only seniors who will be participating in the opener.  However, this would not be enough to stop the Bonnies, now that they have to redeem what they have lost last season.
