Free College Football Picks For Today 9/1/2021
Temple vs. Rutgers Pick Prediction 9/2/2021
Temple vs. Rutgers—College football pick is Rutgers Scarlet Knights -14. Rutgers showed improvement under Greg Shiano last season. Offensively they put up 26.7 points per game which was 13 more in 2019. Every game was against a Big Ten school. They return 21 starters from last year and all on offense. Temple finished 1-6 last year seeing drop off on both sides of the football. They break in a first year starting quarterback and all three are first year starters on the defensive live. Secondary also inexperienced. Final two road games last year resulted in losses by 25 at UCF and 35 at Tulane. Once a strong defensive program the team has slipped under head coach Rod Carey. Last year the Owls allowed 37.1 points and 433 yards per game with 4.8 yards per rush attempt. On offense they were hurt at quarterback with transfers. Play Rutgers -14.
Boise St vs. UCF Pick Prediction 9/2/2021
Boise St vs. UCF—College football free pick is Boise St +5. First year head coach Andy Avalos has an experienced team with seventeen starters back from last season including quarterback Hank Bachmeier. All but one offensive lineman returns and Bachmeier will have his playmakers. Avalos was once a defensive coordinator with the Broncos so expect that area to tighten. They held opposing quarterbacks last year to 52.8% completion rate and were very good getting off the field on third down. Gus Malzahn lands at UCF after betting let go at Auburn. UCF is experienced and has their quarterback Dillon Gabriel back. But the team with all their talent still finished at 6-4. This was on account of a defense that surrendered 33 points and 492 yards per game with 299 in the passing game. Knights allowed 50 to Memphis, 34 to Tulsa, 36 to Cincinnati and 49 in their bowl game to BYU all resulting in losses. They won but didn’t cover at USF as they allowed 46 points to the Bulls. Rather takes the points here. Play Boise ST +5.
USF vs. NC State Pick Prediction 9/2/2021
USF at NC State—Free pick is South Florida Bulls +18.5. Jeff Scott left Clemson as an offensive coordinator to take over as the USF coach last year. They took their lumps in a COVID year and should show improvement for Scott in 2021. This is an experienced team returning eighteen starters from last season. There is a quarterback battle between transfers but all five return to the offensive line. The front seven experienced as well for USF. The offense did show improvement in yardage and in scoring in Scott’s first year. Cover late in the season at Temple and Memphis along with a cover home to UCF is encouraging. NC State an experience team had four losses last year. Defensively they did allow 29 points and 415 yards per game. They did allow 42 points or greater to Wake Forest, North Carolina, Miami and Virginia Tech last season. Not comfortable laying these many points behind this Wolfpack defense. Play USF +18.5.
East Carolina vs. Appalachian St Pick Prediction 9/2/2021
East Carolina vs. Appalachian St—College football pick is East Carolina Pirates +10.5. Mike Houston enters his third season with East Carolina. He had success in his time as head coach with James Madison in the FCS. Pirates are an experienced team returning 10 starters on offense and defense. They closed 2020 with wins at Temple and home to SMU. Pirates showed the ability to move the football last year scoring 30.2 points per game and gaining 403 yards. Appalachian St dropped three games in the regular season last year to Marshall, Coastal Carolina and Louisiana. Point production dropped a bit in 2020 as the team had struggles to cover big point spreads. They couldn’t score enough to cover against the likes of Charlotte, ULM, Texas St, Georgia St and Georgia Southern. They did surrender 4.1 yards per carry on the ground to opponents which was the highest since 2014. Play East Carolina +10.5.
Bowling Green vs. Tennessee Pick Prediction 9/2/2021
Bowling Green vs. Tennessee—College football free pick is Tennessee Volunteers -35. Head coach Josh Heupel makes his debut as head coach for Tennessee after a successful tenure at UCF. He will start Michigan transfer Joe Milton at quarterback. He does have experience at the defensive line which could dominate against this doormat from the MAC in Bowling Green. Scot Loeffler is in his third season at Bowling Green. Program has been pretty bad in his tenure. They finished 0-5 last year facing all MAC schools. Last in scoring at 11.4 points per game and last in college football in points allowed at 45 per game. Quarterback play was very poor as the team completed only 43.2% of their throws facing only MAC opponents. Run defense was atrocious with opponents running for 310 yards and 6.3 yards per rush attempt. That is pretty bad and they are not playing a MAC school here. They are facing an SEC school in Tennessee with a first year head coach and Athletic Director looking to turn around this program. Play Tennessee -35.
Ohio St vs. Minnesota Pick Prediction 9/2/2021
Ohio St vs. Minnesota—Free pick is Ohio St Buckeyes -14. Minnesota was a disappointment for PJ Fleck last year with a 3-4 mark. Their defense surrendered 49 to Michigan, 45 to Maryland and lost to Iowa 35-7. Junior quarterback Tanner Morgan returned but completed only 57% of his throws a season ago. Golden Gophers gave up 6.3 yards per carry in 2020. Ohio St reloads with Ryan Day in his fourth season at the school. This offense has averaged over 500 yards per game in each of Day’s three seasons at the school. They ran the football for 257 yards per game averaging 6 yards per rush which could exploit the Golden Gophers defense. Buckeyes top two receivers return for freshman quarterback CJ Stroud. Both starting tackles are back for Ohio St on the offensive line. Play Ohio St -14.
