Spain did not have such an easy time against a very feisty Swiss side, but they still managed to reach the semi-finals. Switzerland scored an early own goal, at the 8th minute with Zakaria, giving Spain an early lead in that match. It was a pretty quiet first half, but the second half was much more active, with Switzerland pulling back even at the 68th minute with Shaqiri. However, just 9 minutes later they saw a red card that left them with 10 men at the pitch. Spain were controlling the match but could not score the winning goal, and neither did they score in the extra 30 minutes. The match went to the penalty shoot-out, where Switzerland only scored their first penalty kick, and missed the next three.
