Ukraine will try to do something they haven’t done in their previous two tries, and that is to qualify from the group stage. This time the circumstances are somewhat better for Ukraine, as they have been placed in a fairly easy group along with the Netherlands, Austria and North Macedonia.

They are led by legendary striker Andriy Shevchenko, but this time he is at the bench as the team’s coach. The squad doesn’t have a lot of recognizable names but there are a few exceptions, and with Champions League experience too. Manchester City’s wing back Oleksandr Zinchenko played some heavy minutes with his club this season and Atalanta’s Ruslan Malinovsky is also one of the names to watch, along with Shakhtar Donetsk’s Marlos. They also have some great options in the offense with West Ham’s Yarmolenko and Gent’s Yaremchuk, along with goalkeeper Piatov who has a lot of experience.

Ukraine did a marvelous job in the EURO Qualifiers, where they finished at the top of their group with 6 wins and 2 draws (no losses!), while scoring 17 goals and conceding just 4 in return. Two of those four conceded goals came in the 2-2 draw against Serbia, in an indifferent match where Ukraine had already qualified and used an experimental line-up. Mind you, that this group also featured the mighty Portugal and Serbia, among others.

Ukraine have made a seemingly mediocre start in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers with three 1-1 draws in their first three matches. However, one of those was against France, which goes to show that this team can be capable of upsets. Besides France, Ukraine beat Spain in the Nations League, had a 2-2 draw against Serbia and stood strong in the 2-1 loss to Germany.

Ukraine are the 2nd favorites to win this group but this group is the most volatile in the tournament, along with the Group of Death (Germany, France, Portugal, Hungary). They should be able to qualify from this group, even as one of the best 3rd placed teams, but they cannot go much further.
