Notre Dame concluded play in 2015 with a record of 10-3. They faced Ohio St in the Fiesta Bowl and were soundly defeated by the score of 44-28. Brian Kelly returns for his seventh year at the school and will have four starters back on offense and five to the defense. The starting quarterback job is a competition between DeShone Kizer and Malik Zaire. The starter was Zaire until he was lost for the season with a broken leg suffered at Virginia after he was under center for the victory at home to Texas. Kizer completed 63% of his passes last year for 2884 yards with 21 touchdowns and 10 picks. The junior signal caller ran for 520 yards and ten touchdowns. The running game was solid for the Fighting Irish as he ran for 208 yards good for 28th best in the nation. Defensively the team was 45th by allowing 373 yards per game to opponents.
Texas finished a down year with a record of 5-7. They failed to make a bowl game as Charlie Strong enters his third year with the program on the hot seat. He will have seen starters on offense and eight to the defense. The quarterback play has been horrid in Strong’s tenure with the team. There is a battle between freshman Steve Buechele and Tyrone Swoopes. Last year Swoopes starter the season and struggled with accuracy the entire year as he lost his job. The signal caller completed only 50.5% of his throws for 537 yards with four touchdowns and one pick. D’Onta Foreman now a junior led the Longhorns on the ground last season with 681 yards with five touchdowns and 7.2 yards per carry average. Texas struggled on both sides of the field. Once a stout defensive team for years the program has fallen to 107th in the nation in 2015 by surrendering 452 yards per game as they were weak against the run and pass.
