Michigan St earned a shot for the National title off an impressive 82-73 victory over UCONN as a 4-½ point underdog. Michigan St defeated two Big East teams in Connecticut and Louisville as an underdog in their past 2 games to reach the finals. Prior to that the Spartans beat last years National Champions Kansas 67-62 in the Sweet 16 and USC in the Round of 32 74-69. USC was the smart bettor’s dark horse for the Tournament. Michigan St was tested in their past 4 contests as they reach the finals with a very strong resume. North Carolina has been favored by at least 7 points in every game and has won and covered all of them. Though the competition getting to the finals was a bit easier the Tar Heels pounded Villanova in the semifinals 83-69. North Carolina has beaten all 5 of their 2009 NCAA Tournament opponents by 12 points or more. Total bettors should be aware that North Carolina is 4-1 to the under in this tournament. The current total of 153 is the lowest total the Tar Heels have been lined at thus far in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. North Carolina averages 88.8 points per game ranking them 2nd in the nation. The Tar Heels also do a good job of getting to the free throw line as they average 25.5 attempts per game ranking them 10th nationally. Defensively the Tar Heels rebound the basketball 10th best in the nation as they average 26.1 boards per game. The teams met back on December 3rd with North Carolina pounding Michigan St 98-63 as a 10-point favorite. The Tar Heels shot nearly 48% for the game compared to 34.8% shooting for the Spartans. Michigan St was very sloppy with the basketball as they committed 21 turnovers in that game. The game was played at the current site of the Final Four at Ford Field in Detroit. The attendance was poor as Ford Field was only a third full and didn’t provide the current backdrop that a Final Four presents. The game was so one sided that North Carolina head coach Roy Williams played 14 players. Michigan St coach Tom Izzo took the blame for the lopsided loss by scheduling too difficult leading up to the game. Michigan St scoring forward Goran Suton missed the game due to injury. These teams have met recently in the NCAA Tournament with North Carolina winning 81-67 in the Round of 32 as a 10-point favorite in 2007 and 87-71 as a 5-point favorite in 2005 Final Four National Semifinal. In the 2007 NCAA Tournament Game Tyler Hansbrough started and scored 33 points. Ty Lawson who scored 20 points with 8 assists as the starting point guard. Wayne Ellington also was in the starting lineup in that 2007 Tournament game for the Tar Heels.
